I am looking for the best 500GB external hard drive I can get. I think it will have to be USB 2.0 because It is looking too expensive for me to stick them internally or using as a NAS.

Buy an External enclosure and buy an internal 500GB disk. Combine :)

From my experiance, you cant go wrong with IcyBox.

Just out of interest, why is it too expensive to go internal? the hard disks themselfs are the same.

Wonderful recommendation for the items I have FS - couldnt have worded it better myself. Icybox NAS is both NAS 10/100 and USB2. Likewise the Maxtor HD is cheap! :D

I've got a WD MyBook Essential 500GB and I love it. Looks much better than an IcyBox and automatically powers up/down with the PC, as well as sleeping when not in use. It also worked out quite a bit cheaper than buying an enclosure with an internal drive.

Lacie 500gb, can be had for £150.

Good drives, i have a 300gb model that i bought 16months ago and its still going strong. Soon will be getting a 600gb version

That Lacie one is a two disk RAID0 array though, perhaps not the best if you're looking for a reliable backup solution.
