Best External Drive 400-500GB

The best option usually is to get a drive and caddy separately that way you can pair the drive that you want with a caddy that provides the features you're after.

What sort of connection do you want between the drive and the PC - USB2, Firewire or eSATA?

Thanks for the info. USB2 i think would be the best bet.

Can you suggest any good enclosures?

The Icy Dock MB559US-1S looks pretty neat, takes a SATA drive and gives you the option of either USB2 or eSATA connections. The review of it that I saw suggested that it came with an eSATA PCI blanking plate socket that plugged onto a mobo SATA port.

If you're looking for something cheaper then any of the IcyBox caddies should be fine, just check whether the caddy takes IDE, SATA or either HDDs

The WD external drives are awesome. I have one sitting here on my desk and you can't hear it at all!

Is that one of the MyBook devices? There seems to be two versions, standard and premium - what are the differences?
