Hey all

I was just wondering what external hard drive would be the best to get? Whether it be a specific hard drive, or just a certain brand. I was looking at the Western Digital MyBook ones, and also the Lacie ones.

Thanks.

Could do it cheaper by going with an external BYOD* caddy (e.g. IcyBox) & the £39.99 Samsung F1 500GB ;)

Nice one - I was considering doing this, but then does it run as well/quiet as a proper external Hard Drive? :)
Yes.

I've got the IcyBox IB-360AStUS housing a 4-year old SATA1 160GB & apart from the (aging) drive read/write noise it's very quiet since its passive. Built of aluminum also means the HD runs cool.

Thinking of upgrading to the 500GB Samsung F1. Apart from the good price they're considered the quietest make ;)

I can't seem to find that Hard Drive on Amazon (I hope I'm allowed to mention them) Could you give me a hand please mate? (I have vouchers on there that's why I need to buy it from there)

Go for the Icy Box 390 (USB2 & eSata ports) and the Samsung F1 drives... Quiet, cool, fast and reasonably priced. Good combo to have.

Are Samsung known for the reliability in the HDD department? :)

I need an external HDD for September when I go back to college (new course recommends having an external HDD!) but if I'm gonna have work on there and stuff I'd like it to be fairly reliable. :)

Will also backup movies and tv shows too and I'll probably have double backups of the work but would be nice not having to RMA anything. :

I was going to go for a £60 WD Elements drive but I read multiple negative comments about how they tend to die so that has put me off.

I've used other Samsung drive in the past and always found them to be reliable. Had my current Icy Box 390 & 1Tb Samsung F1 for a few weeks now... so not long enough to test.

Seems the 1Tb Samsung F1 did have some teething issue but they seem to have been sorted with recent drives batches.

Sounds great! Can you still share the hard drive over a network if through USB? I share a folder on my PC at the moment where my parents can watch TV shows from. :)

Best it what?, your question is very vague?

WD Scorpio Drive's are very compact, up to 320GB I believe.., quieter than desktop drives and only require a single USB for Data/Power

get an icybox 390, they're £19.96 and a 500gb samsung is about £43ish, or a 1000gb samsung is £90ish

has esata (full drive speed) and usb2 (all usb connections are limited to about 35mb /s max)

I bought the Seagate FreeAgent 500gb, it's quick and quiet and the bundled software isn't too bad. Orange light isn't too invasive either, and I think you can disable or dim it from the software.

All in all, top drive.
