Best file format for videos.

That's still about 250MB for a 90-minute movie, though, which is gonna look cack if your screen's bigger than about 17in.

Pretty much. (For example) My Futurama Episodes are 412Mb in length. They are 22 minutes. Perfick.
I watch mine on my 37" HDTV through my PS3 (Twonky ***). I have no complaints about any movies.

I did say it depends on what size screen you were using, i have a 17 inch one i used to use and the 120mb for a 40 min (i had 500mb for a 2hr film) and it was just as good as watching it from the DVD) but last year i got a 32 inch high def TV so now its about 1-1.5gb for a 40 min show from a bluray and about 4gb for a film

I've got an old Xbox running XBMC on the TV and I also watch my vids on the laptop via a wireless connection. My preferred format for this set up is Xvid (.avi).

I've played around with other file formats and encoders but found Xvid suits my needs best. I only have a 22" TV so I don't notice much deterioration in the picture - but I doubt my vids would stand up to scrutanisation on a 42" hi-def set up...

For ripping my DVDs I've been using DVD Shrink and AutoGK. With this set up I can rip a number of DVDs to file and then queue them to convert with AutoGK overnight. AutoGK has a bunch of presets that work just fine too (I found WinAVI and Handbrake too fiddly to get a picture/file size that I was happy with).
