So... a **** load of choices really. It might be an idea to use a free one to begin with (basically - FlightGear, where the graphics in 2.0 are passable, decent physics model and no limit to the number of planes or airports you can add or Rise of Flight, with only two planes but looks to me to have better graphics) , learn the basics and then decide what you want from a paid sim.

A bit of googling suggests that XPlane 10 comes out later this year, might be worth holding out for?

There is a ton of choices. Flight sims have made a bit of a resurgence recently, it's pretty good news!

I'd say pick one and stick to it so you learn all the advanced controls and stuff. Jumping between a couple of sims just leads to brain overload.

Of course once you do learn 1 it does make it easier to pick up others later down the line.

I would (agree to?) disagree that DCS: A10C would be hard or a steep curve to get into. It has a lot of switchology, but the live tutorial and pause type features don't make it a chore to get moving with.

You just have to build up the motor knowledge before you go out doing your own thing without that help, but the help that is available to you all the time as you get started mitigates a lot of the initial difficulty, IMO.

If we were talking about their other DCS title, BlackShark, then I'd agree it might be a little rough / daunting for a first timer, since the tutorials don't have quite the same amount of hand-holding and visual cueing around the ****pit available, and just generally a bit of a harder ride to handle (even with the 'helpers' enabled, if you don't know how they're helping, you will still likely be taken by surprised and crash from them until you do learn).

i tried xplane about a year ago and uninstalled it about 10 mins later after trying the 777 that came with and finding it handled like a cessna.

im just speculationg here, but i think x-plane needs a lot of tweaking before use and relies on quite a bit of third party software

FSX mate, it's great for beginers. Stunning graphics espesially if you purchase orbx and horizon vfr generation x scenery. Zillions of aircraft add ons and a huge choice of hardware peripherals from joystics and yokes with throttle systems, switch pannels, auto pilot pannels, instrument pannels. Just check out the Saitek range.
Start off as basic as you like then just add to it as and when or keep it basic either way you'll have lots of fun.

Get Rise of Flight and IL2 1946 (GoG.com) and get the basics down first, then decide what you want next.

I'd agree with Dano's choices but I'd add Lock On in there as well. Those 3 sims would be close enough in terms of fidelity/difficulty and any of them would be a good choice for a first sim.

Thanks all, think i'll get myself a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and give Rise of Flight a go, then probably buy FSX gold later :)
