Best Football Manager Game

Can you build stadiums etc in Football Manager 2009? or is it just totally based on the football side of things, maybe I need to do some research. :)

"Football" Manager :p.

Nah, you can't...in the editor you can do anything, of course.

Haven't played the last couple of iterations, but in FM2007 you couldn't really build stadia yourself. You could ask the board to expand the stadium though.

The CM/FM series is probably one of the most focussed on the football side of things, you don't really do stuff like setting ticket prices, deploying burger vans etc like you can in some games.

Might have a look into getting it then, tempted to get it for the PSP as well ><

Thank you for expanding on your points instead of just FM2009!!! ;):p

I used to love Ultimate Soccer Manager 2 by Sierra, hard to believe its like 10 year old now.

Haven't played a Football Manager game since.

Used to play this ages ago too ! FM2009 is great now, though the tactics are fairly difficult to perfect as i've found (new starter in FM, not played since CM3)

Championship Manager 01/02.

Simply the best by miles. Not the complicated mess that FM games are nowadays although I still enjoy them.

agreed, frankly ever new version I try is worse than the last. You get an even better and bigger team at a new richer club and you still get absurd results, or that game where half the side score own goals, or you have 462 shots on target and lose 3-0 to a team that gets no shots on target and 3 deflected own goals.

For me, every new version since then has brought a larger player database, more visual representation and more names for the same options, but more bugs aswell.

01/02 was great.

EDIT:- on second thoughts 01/02 doesn't seem "that" long ago, maybe I'm thinking more like 97/98, who knows, time flies though :(

Jesus, just played the demo, yes it might be buggy(it did crash, so stopped bothering) the game is taken a little to seriously, do players have to react to everything you say, especially when sometimes the options you are given to say are so badly writen and too often too similar yet have players hate or love you based on a single word.

Then the 3d engine, which may or may not be "better" in the full game. It looks pathetic, its still fairly useless, it goes a little deeper and further shows that the "calculations" behind the gameplay are crap and players rarely move/do what you'd want them to in real life, defenders step up at retarded times for no apparent reason. Without that you can kid yourself the engine behind the matches might be working well.

The multitude of players that have a value but you can't afford, at the end of the day I think adding in the 120million buy out clauses ruins it somewhat. its supposed to be so realistic but then its ruined by the guys behind it not rating a certain player so he's crap and you can't use him, so its not particularly realistic, maybe you have, Ireland in your squad but he's useless, so instead of using him you need to go out and buy a replacement, say Lampard, who you can't get.

Its just so much more frustrating than the old versions, it does too much to try and feel ultrarealistic, but screws you left right and centre unless you are one of the 3 teams they accurately model the players for.

IMHO far to much time spent making ugly 3d engines and no where near enough time spent on researching players. not to mention taking forum members advice on player ratings :( at least its the first time in years Vassell doesn't have good stats, finally.

In FM2007, I stayed at ipswich for 20 years or so and won everything... the board suddenly decided they were going to build a 100,000 seater stadium and name it [My Surname] Stadium in my honour. Now that was cool.

They have hundreds, perhaps even thousands of people worldwide watching games in the Belgian division 3 etc trying to compile stats about players. There's always going to be differences of opinion between how people rate a player though.

I do think as the game has progressed it has got harder and harder. Perhaps it's even too hard these days... you don't want the game to feel like a job... it should be fun.

The guys who do the research have no other role in the creation of the game. They use people from the forums who meet certain criteria to research each club.

FM2008/2009 are both decent games......but if the OP last enjoyed CM 97/98 then the FM series will more than likely be a big letdown!

FM is a great football mangement SIM but it hasnt half sucked the fun out of the genre!!

For me, CM 01-02 with the patch and latest data update is the way to go! :p
