You HAVE to try both yourself. I asked exactly the same question and everyone was suggesting FIFA08, got that, though it was a bit pap and bought Pro Evo which I loved so am playing that now. Haven't touched FIFA in ages. It's not that it's a bad game, I just prefer Pro Evo. Try both yourself and then make a decision

Another vote for FIFA08. I used to swear by the Pro Evo series until this year. FIFA08 has won hands down this year with out a doubt.

That does seem to be the case for many, but for me it's been a gradual slide from 5 onwards. 2008 was the last straw, pretty lucky that FIFA was finally on the money the exact same year.
