Hi,
Been stalking these forums recently and have spoken to the OCUK shop last Saturday to get my starting advice. Have an old Samsung 23" inch which is 1080p but with no HDMI input. I'm not a purist, dont set up colour thingys and cant afford GSYNC. Currently playing BF1 at the moment, plus Titanfall 2, Max Payne 3, Rocket League as examples. It is mostly a gaming machine, using Roccat Kave 5.1 headphones.

Pretty much decided to only get 144Mhz at 1080p (not 1440) with both HDMI and DP input options but not sure whether to go for 24", 25" or 27". I am concerned over the physical size as I only sit 70-80cm ish away but not yet made it into see them (I use a 24" at work and thats not small), hence why a 25 is in there.

Monitors on my short list so far:
24 - AOC g2460PF
25 - Samsung LS25HG50fquxen
27 - Iiyama Prolite GB2788HSB1
27 - Acer GN276HL

I appreciate that there is a lot of appreciation for Dell, and I fondly remember my 21" Iiyama CRT (what a beast that was). Am I missing an obvious choice please for a different 24"?

EDIT - 111 views and no response so disappointed was reading pages of the very long 21.9" ultrawide thread - would one of these run on this card fine?
Thx

I think 24 is the sweet spot for 1080 IMO, I think a 27" looks too big for that res.

I personally would look at a 27" 1440p monitor unless you're used to a 144hz one or dead set on this.

Out of your list, the samsung stands out to me as the one to get.

I have an ultrawide, and haven't looked back - but it was a decision between 1440p 27" vs 34" 3440x1440, I don't think i'd look at other options should I have to revisit.

The best 24'' 144hz monitor is viewsonic xg2401, great colours & fantastic responsiveness, plus the added bonus of Freesync if you ever change cards.

For ultrawides I have the LG 29'' and the colours on this are fantastic (best thing about it really). Can recommend, it's also at a very good price.

Like you yourself concluded, you can't afford G-Sync with that budget - or you would only get the very bottom of the barrel. But you should still opt for FreeSync. Sure, you can't, at least for now, benefit from FreeSync with an nVidia card. But the option is waiting for you, in case you happen to upgrade to an AMD card in the future. And because FreeSync doesn't bring the price premium (like G-Sync does!), there is no reason NOT to choose FreeSync.

In addition to FreeSync, I would also strongly recommend choosing an IPS or VA panel monitor. I would also recommend choosing one with LFC compatibility, which I consider an essential part for FreeSync functionality.

Here are some candidates, with the above features:
Samsung C24FG70 (/C24FG73)
Acer Predator XZ271
Lenovo Y27f
Samsung C27FG70 (/C27FG73)
Acer XZ321Q (might be too big for most people)

Most of them go above the £300 (at least in OcUK), but if you're not that keen to go above the budget, then they're at least a good comparison point.

Brilliant thanks for responding, but such a range of opinions!
Webzta - been previously advised against 1440 res because my card may not have full legs, and not used to 144Mhz (yet?) and did you opt for the 27" or 34"?
Poneros - thanks will add that Viewsonic to the list.
Aatu - never been sure about the Catalyst system and drivers with AMD cards, saw it on another PC and it was like I had never set one up. Will check though your list too.

Just to clarify:

Even if you don't have an AMD card, the monitors I mentioned will still function as regular 144Hz monitors. So like I said: no reason NOT to opt for FreeSync, if/when you can't afford G-Sync.

Actually, I'm not sure whether you can nowadays even find a new 144Hz monitor without FreeSync or G-Sync. 60Hz monitors, sure. But from what I can see, out of all the 20 144Hz monitors released this year (so far), 15 are FreeSync, and 5 are G-Sync. None without one.

Some extra details for the 20 new 144Hz monitors:
- 10 are VA, 8 are TN, 2 are IPS (*)
- 14 are 1920x1080, 4 are 2560x1440, 2 are 2560x1080 (UW)
- 12 are curved, 8 are flat
- 4 are 24", 3 are 25", 7 are 27", 1 is 30", 4 are 32", 1 is 34"
- ALL have matte coating

(*): It seems manufacturers are waking up to the IPS' quality control issues, when deciding on the features for enthusiast class monitors...

Ps. Although, be sure to check this first (especially the ending paragraph):

Will be fine for 1440 mate, maybe you won't sit at 200FPS but I have plenty of friends running 1440p with a 1060 and it's very smooth with all the latest titles.

I went for the 34 and haven't looked back, but I was lucky to have money spare at the time and it was only around 600 odd for the LG Curved one at the time.

People do rave about 144hz, but I think if you haven't experienced it then you don't know what you're missing and if that's the case then my view is to get the 27" 1440p without the 144hz and enjoy!

Resurrecting as cant stop reading this forum!
Moved my PC into another room and will be wall mounting a new monitor, meaning I am going to be sitting slightly further away. My current monitor is 10 years old and I change graphics cards more often.
Therefore, decision is for a 27" 1440p monitor to future proof the screen (a little), I appreciate that there will be occasions to turn down the settings on some games.
However, am upgrading second machine for Xmas and this will likely be the recipient of my Gainward 6Gb 1060 in a couple of years (or less?).
Recent gaming now also includes: Forza Horizon 3 and Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Therefore, am trying to close down the options from my OP, comments please and would stretch the budget a bit.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £814.07
(includes shipping: £14.10)

Another thing you could consider is an ultra-wide 29". Ultra-wide really are nice for gaming, and movies too. Because they are only 2560x1080 they are easier to drive. Overclockers sell a few in your range. Bear in mind, however, you definitely need at least that 29" because although they are very wide they look smaller than a 2560x1440 monitor of the same diagonal width.

Which LG please? Now Pocah has thrown another option into the mix, it makes a lot of sense. Even though I really need to have made a decision by Black Friday.....
