Currently, what is the best program to use for creating and managing your own forum??

I use phpbb at the moment, but have tried LDU/Seditio, VB etc.

However I am moving my forums over to MyBB www.mybboard.net and have to say for customisation and manageability it is far better than phpBB and I have been usibng that for 4 years.

phpBB isn't nice, and it certainly isn't light-weight ;)
At least in my experience.

The beta looks nice enough. I've never used it so I wouldn't know how lightweight it is, although I didn't say it was. I said punbb is the lightweight one.

Edit: my fault, when i quoted you, I meant I was agreeing with you (without bothering to type anything lol) and adding that there was a new phpbb which looked visually nice, which he might like. Sorry for the confusion.

speaking of the beta, have you guys seen the final look of phpBB3 yet? they've converted their site to it at www.phpbb.com

i don't like the layout tbh, with the avatars etc on the right hand side.

and anyway SMF is still way better than phpBB3. i've been testing olympus since beta1 and i was impressed at first, but SMF has more features that end-users actually want in a messageboard.

My only gripe with SMF is that theming isn't that straightforward compared to IPB etc. The feature set is rather nice though.

I have IPB running - just 'existing' not very active or anything - and it gets hit by bots all the time signing up and posting crap.

SMF which, again I had running, didn't allow anything through but I really didn't like the layer system for themes... Not yet tested phpbb - thats next on my list. v3 looks good.

v3 looks good.
it's not bad, it's got a powerful admin cp but as i said above, it lacks features. it's basically the same as v2 but with more stuff for admins yet little in the way of new features for your registered users. which is especially dissapointing given the amount of time it took to develop.

vBulletin is the best, full stop.

I know some people, and have heard people saying they love phpBB over vBulletin. Mainly because of the easy customization.

vBulletin may be the most secure & have the most built-in features, but it's up to the people who run the forums to decide which is best. :)

I personally recommend phpBB because it's free.

If you're prepared to pay ~£100 then vBulletin.

phpbb3's new default style looks awesome imo, so much better than subsilver.

However, as already said, avatars on the right fail. But apart from that I'm tempted to go back to it. :o

Edit: Wahey.

given that you said 'go back' how do you think it is different now to the reasons you left in the first place?

Inbuilt global annoucements etc.

I stopped using it because I changed my portal to php-fusion which has an inbuilt forum, however I've yet to convice the members to swap over. :)
