Best game of all time (all platforms)

Are you reading the same thread I am?

I'm not saying that proves it, but this thread does not disprove it.
You said that it's generally accepted OOT is the best ever game. Enough people in here, myself included, have named different games, suggesting its not generally accepted by everyone.

Merriam-Webster said:
Definition of GENERALLY

: in a general manner: as
a : in disregard of specific instances and with regard to an overall picture <generally speaking>
b : as a rule : usually

I know the definition of generally, thanks. You quoted 8 people who said OOT was the best ever. I can quote at least 30 people who say something else. That doesn't equate to "generally".

OI!!!!!

Misquote of the century!

Yea, first time playing Ocarina of Time too.

I've only played it for a couple of days, but I already see its better that Final Fantasy 8 and most other console games were.

But Civ II remains my favorite, though I will end up really liking OOT too.

There have been so many fantastic games over the years, that I have to grade them

in how much time I have put into them.

So for me, in no particular order: Fallout 3, Gran Turismo (1), FFVII, Timesplitters (MP).

I don't know if you're being deliberately obtuse, over-defending your original post or truly don't get it.

As I said in my original post, my comment was not based on this thread, it was based on multiple online polls, critics and countless threads like this, here and on other forums. This covers tens of thousands of people if not more. Now you claim that 30 people choose different games and that disproves those other thousands of people over multiple polls covering many years.

To my second comment, which I said unequivocally did not prove it was the best. I was pointing out that even in this thread oot seems to be the most popular "best" choice. If we dont pick the game with the most votes we can either give up and this entire thread is moot or someone can choose another metric to decide.

well ive played a lot of games going back from the c64, n64, speccy, PS1, megadrive, amiga, various PCs..

It really is quite difficult to pick a greatest because a game at the time can be Legendary.

e.g. Elite just ****** awesome. The era in which the game comes out makes a difference as well....maybe coz gaming was growing but not like nowadays..ie lots of small bedroom/basement devs and such.

A toss up between

Elite
Planescape Torment (pc)
Sensible Soccer (amiga)
Heavy Rain (ps3)
KOTOR (pc)
Monkey Island 2: Le Chucks Revenge (pc)
FF7 (console)
Wing Commander 3 (pc)
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Deus Ex

not many new games i guess just coz it takes a lot more to impress me or blow me away these days.

Others which almost make it:
Zelda OOT, Morrowind, Ultima VII, F19 Stealth Fighter, LCP, Edge of Chaos, Dragon Age Origins, Neverwinter Nights, Dune 2, The Nomad Soul, Death Knights of Krynn, Syndicate, Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout 2, Championship Manager 93/94

My greatest games of all times would have to be the ones that I spent most time on when growing up.

Golden Axe, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, IK+, Sensible World of Soccer, Cannon Fodder and Sonic the Hedgehog are all games that I remember pouring hours into as a kid.

Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time as a teenager.

Unreal Tournament on a 56k modem was my first introduction to online FPS and it was fantastic!

Couldn't rate any recent releases alongside any of the classics above, newer games just don't seem to have that magic anymore.

Ocarina of Time (N64) - No comment required, best game ever imo.

These games were awesome as well

Goldeneye (N64) - We used to run home to my friends house at lunchtime from school to play this game!
Mario 64 (N64) - Maybe not the best but first game I remember bringing a true 3D environment, ground breaking game at the time.
Mario Kart (SNES) - Remember as kids when we used to go our cousins house our parents literally had to drag us out of the room to get us off this game!

So many more games, the N64 in particular had so many good games. A real shame to see Nintendo move off into a different direction really, I still get tempted now and again to buy a Wii just so I can play the latest Zelda games!

I think in terms of how good it was when it came out, Super Mario World.

Everything about it is just brilliant and it's one of very few games that just hasn't dated in my opinion.

Close second is half life. That's just because it was an outstanding game in my eyes.
