Best game recording software

I also hate fraps as it splits the video after it reaches 4gb roughly every 10 mins of video recording.
I don't see your problem with that;

a) good luck finding space on a fragmented HDD for a 100GB video file.
b) you'll need to encode the video again to reduce the size so what's so hard about joining the pieces together?

Another point to make if you use FRAPS. Some games have inbuilt recording and playback (e.g. Call of Duty has a /record function in the console) and if you use this and FRAPS the playback, it is a lot smoother. Plus you can just record the bits you want, thus saving time and space.

Record to different HDD than game drive.
.

That sounds like something I could try. I get a juddering once fraps starts recording, like the framerate goes down or something and the game isn't as smooth anymore. Would recording to one of my other drives reduce that?

I've used fraps and such (gamecam or something) and tbh id probably recommend Fraps over the others I've used, does the job :)

Yes it does. Recording to a different drive is a must really.

Well, I just uninstalled fraps from my game drive and reinstalled it to a different drive. But no matter whether I have recording capture settings set to 29.97, 30, 50 or 60fps at either half size or full size, with or without vsync enabled, it always brings my 60 to 70 frames per second ingame (nfs shift as an example) down to mid 30's to 40's. Is there a way to set fraps to record without it reducing my ingame framerate?

The final recording is always smooth enough, it's just the way the game framerate is during play.

You set the video record location to another drive, not install the app on another drive!

You'll always get an fps drop though, even with Framerate Lock disabled in Fraps I record at Half Res (ingame 1920x1200) at 30fps and ingame fps drops from 80~ to 60 during recording. This is recording to my documents drive.

With Framerate Lock enabled the fps drops to 40 which is locked - hence the new option to allow lock to be disabled which is great.

At half res though this is perfectly fine, playing at 60fps while recording is great and stutter free. recording at Full res drops fps to 45~ which is lower than I prefer so half res it is. The quality is immense of the recordings especially once converted to Youtube happy formats.

Set the recording to 30FPS and don't lock the FPS. Your game will play at whatever FPS you had before and the recording will be locked at 30 FPS.

The fps will still drop but not as much now that fps lock is off. CPU usage jumps from 60~ to 90% recording L4D 2 on a quad core 3.6GHz for example and that's half resolution 30fps lock off.

Fraps 3.1 needed.

Ah! :)

Btw, I did try recording ingame by just setting the video record location to another drive before reinstalling the whole of fraps to a different drive, but it made no difference, hence why I then tried reinstalling fraps to the other drive.
