Best gameplay recording software?

Hi all

For those of you who record your gaming, which software do you prefer? I've tried Fraps and I like the simplicity but I have 3 problems with it: no mic recording function, very system-intensive, uses AVI.

Can you recommend any alternatives based on your own experiences?

Thanks a lot.

FRAPS does have a mic recording option. I find its not that system intensive, you will get a lot of lag if you are saving video to the same disc as the game you are running. If you really want decent, low system resource usage video recording. Use a capture card that encodes on the fly.

Under movies tab, on the sound capture section its called 'record external input', but I would advise you record it in something else as you can change the sound levels later on.

I want one of those devices that you plug into your PC or Console. Is it HDPR recorder or something ?

No matter what software I use it always affects my FPS.

The Avermedia Live Gamer HD will also affect your FPS slightly.

It's better to be used as a capture source than an encoder, which means your PC has to encode the captured images which in turn hurts your FPS.

(Oh and 1,000 posts :D)

Dxtory is the best because you can choose what encoder you use to capture with. Lots of hard drive space and fast CPU? Dxtory lets you use RGB24, completely uncompressed. Lacking hard drive space but have a fast CPU? Dxtory lets you use Lagarith - arguably the best lossless video codec. Very little hard drive space but fast CPU? Dxtory lets you use x264vfw which encodes in x264 on the fly as it's capturing, which gives insanely low file sizes. Slow CPU? Dxtory lets you use Ut Video Codec in fast decompress mode which is very light on the CPU.

Bandicam and Fraps give you very very few options.

I'm still a big fan of Dxtory; it's still what I use.

However, I think Neil79 posted an update in the Graphics Card forum a while back quoting the patch notes from the new version showing it should be possible to use MSI Afterburner with Lagarith and it now supported multiple recording sources (i.e. game input AND headset mic on separate audio tracks).

I can't verify the changes, but if it's true then it's the best free solution available.

Yes you can use the Lagarith codec in the latest MSI Afterburner and record 2 sources at once.
