I’m looking to get a gaming laptop maximum budget is £1800. Not too sure what the best specs to look for. This will be my first gaming laptop. Can anyone recommend any?

It entirely depends on what games you play.

If you play csgo then 1080p and 360hz screen is ideal.

If you play RPG or single player games then you want QHD 1440p screen with a lower refresh rate possibly 120hz.

I'd avoid 4k on a laptop to future proof yourself for future games. Unless your planning on buying a new laptop for £1800 every couple of years.

Things like ram, SSD size I wouldn't worry about both of those can easily be upgraded by yourself and for buttons.

Ram can be found on eBay for £30 at times for an 8GB stick and SSD brand new are £80 for a terabyte and £120 for M2 nvme variety.

So the main things you need to focus on are GPU and screen.

Manufacturers don't tend to pair crap cpu with decent gpu and screen so those 2 are what I would nail down what you want then see what's available.

OK that helps, i think RAM wise 16gb is fine enough. But the laptops ive looked at only have a 1tb SSD which will be tight!

So if its easy enough id like a 2nd one in there just to dump files on. I should be good for 1tb on games, i dont have loads installed anyhow

Not normally if it's things like SSD and RAM, which is just about the only thing you can upgrade anyway.

I usually decide what GPU I can afford and then pick the cheapest laptop built around that and upgrade the SSD and RAM.

WiFi cards is another I've done.

That's the only 3 I would ever do though.

Storage
RAM
WiFi card

Everything else is done externally. Like external sound card. Gaming mouse, larger screen, keyboard can all be attached through a dock or directly. No need to open it up.

16GB of ram is plenty.

Storage wise things can be limited by how many ports there are inside the case.

Usually gaming laptops have 2 sometimes 3. I'd upgrade the OS drive to something really fast and 1TB and then you can spend a bit less on the additional drive or move the original drive over for storage if possible.

Worst comes to worst you can always buy a usb drive. I actually have a usb 3.1 to M2 nvme external dock which ingot for like £10-£15. I then have a spare M2 nvme drive in that which I can plug into a usb slot for additional storage. No need to open it up but much slower than direct connection but still fast enough to not really matter.

It's easy to clone a drive. Free software and YouTube tutorials are available.

I upgraded my laptop to a 1tb 970 Evo plus from a sabrent 256gb and it was flawless and simple procedure using the usb 3.1 to M2 nvme adapter / case I bought.

Yeh, I like to have two drives, which is almost always (but check!) standard.

My Lenovo was the cheapest RTX2060 when I bought it, but I checked and it had a spare slot and a decent (fast but small) SSD fitted.

So I went:

8GB -> 16 GB dual channel
1 x 256GB SSD -> 1 x 256GB + 1 x 1TB SSD
80W RTX2060 -> 115W RTX2060 (BIOS flash, so definitely not warranty-friendly)

Cheers, if i can get my hands on one if these ASUS machines then ill look at a 2nd SSD as im sure i read they has space. Even another 1tb if they arent crazy priced.
