That's the first time I've ran Crysis BM on my [email protected] and was shocked at the difference the cpu made, the BM was tanking along compared to the Q6600!

As regarding the op, 580 isn't going to give you any better results than your 6970, the 580 needs an Intel setup to push it.

All the gpu benchmarks are done on Intel setups for a reason, they get the very best from each gpu.

I'm not bashing AMD here, simply stating the difference a cpu can make.

If you were prepared to spend £350 on a gpu, I think it would be much better spent on a 2500K and a good MB, then you will see the true speed of your 6970.

You will get a good price for your cpu as well due to the prices going through the roof lately.

Try using the new FPS cap feature in the latest afterburner beta. Just set it to whatever the lowest you dip to is, round it down or whatever.

I'm in the same boat mate, im not happy with my 6970 @ 980... BF3 42/5 fps x2x2 high 1080p. Also Crysis2 with tes, dx11 pack 40fps

Wow really? i have a Phenom II X4 955BE stock, with a 5850 xtreme and i get 40+ fps on high in 1080p. i have not seen it dip below that on multiplayer.

the 7970 may be the best buy but if over £499 i can get the 6990 for £499 new (if only i had £499 though lol)

the 7970 is singlechip, it works fine in all games... plus oc and it has more low powersupply, than gtx 580 and 6990. it is realy bestbuy!
the 6990 is dualchip in CFX mode, this tandem not always works well in all games, if in one from many games CFX not works performance will very slow, than 7970, it has ~500W and giant size as a black brick lol

Yeah that's what im thinking.

Running 3DMark 11... 6970 @ 1000/1500, 955 @ 4314 = only 5770

* I'm upgrading for sure *

why go on 3d mark ?

play the games like i said something wrong with your set up if you getting that low fps in bf3 i have a lower clocked 955 and get better fps with a unlocked 6950 at 6970 speeds

upgrading to a i2500k for eg at even 5ghz in bf3 will give you all of 0 fps boost :D its a gpu limited game thats why i kept with my 955 as for gaming there isnt much point as the 99 percent of games just dont need anymore.

check your oc is stable as it is rather high for a 955 aswell

on high settings i get like 60 fps avg and thats at same res as you on ultra its about 40 thats with msaa on

getting a lot of framerate dips on my 6970 @930/1400 (specs in sig) in games like ss3 & rage etc , is it worth changing for something £350 ?

May be worth waiting until the HD 7950 3GB is released in a few weeks, probably on a par with the GTX 580 at stock and hopefully can overclock like the HD 7970. Nice large memory buffer perfect for games like Battlefield 3, there may be some price drops the older cards on both sides over the next few weeks aswell...

The minimum fps you get, even with a 7970, will probably stay the same because of CPU limitations.

As others have said, the money spent would be far more effective if you bought a 2500k.

Even after that, there's little difference between the 580 and the 6970 anyway.
