Best GPU for £50

8800gt is only about £20-25, and old computer will be in good synergy. No need for more powerful card like £60 460gtx 768mb (or equivalent) because that will be bottlenecked by CPU.

Problem is PSU of OP's friend's PC won't be good enough for any gaming graphic card that require additional PCI-E power. Bus-powered card is really the only option...unless his friend is gonna upgrade PSU for the sake of a already dated and slow system.
 
his PSU is 250w, and thats only the stated output on a cheapy chinese PSU, i've tried to put him off doing it but if he still decides to spend on it the advice here will be really useful, thanks very much!
 
Make sure that if you get an HD5670 or HD6670 it is the GDDR5 version. The GDDR3 versions are much slower and a GT440 GDDR5 would probably be faster than them(the GT440 GDDR5 is around 15% slower than an HD5670 GDDR5 IIRC).
