ATI Radeon cards
for £120 you can pick up a 4890 which is a superb card
for the same money a 5770 can be had it has slightly less power than a 4890 but is consumes less electricity and is quieter and is a DX11 card
Nvidia cards
im not being biased in saying generally poor value for money
the GTX260 is on par with the above cards but is more like £150

ATi and Nvidia are the two companies that design gaming GPUs. There are then a number of smaller companies that take care of the manufacturing and distribution of the cards themselves.

Sapphire, Powercolor and the like produce ATi cards. EVGA, BFG, Zotac etc. produce Nvidia cards. Some manufacturers deal with both ATi and Nvidia.

Radeon is ATi's brand, GeForce is Nvidia's brand.

The best card on the market right now is the ATi Radeon 5970. In fact, ATi have the high end segment sewn up right down to £130 or so. So it really depends how much you have to spend (and to some extent how long your case is, as ATi's high end stuff is large.)

ha i dont at the moment,
im on my mrs Dell 1545 laptop blasting out doom3 its not the best,
im looking to buy a 22inch monitor
and obvioulsy would like it to nice to play,
with the hdmi port could i plug it into our 32lcd and play?

Even though you're saying £100 most people will recommend the ATI HD4890 for bang-for-buck performance. It will run any game you throw at it but it can't utilise DX11 for newer games (DIRT2 and the like). That's around £120-£130 for the card. Most cards that are around the £100 mark and below generally tend to be quite a few steps down in performance terms (for example, the nVidia 9800GT is still around £85 and is way below the performance levels of the 4890).

I bought one of these recently and I am delighted with it. A little over your budget though.

Or you could consider something like :

The 4890 is the more powerful of the two.

If Dx11 is utmost on your mind then these are good and this is much closer to your original budget :

I got a GTX 260 recently too. There are some decent prices around though... Although rules don't permit me to tell you where!

Still over your £100 budget though.

You can check this site for Benchmarks. Plenty listed. Also, you can choose a program for the benchmark. Different types of programs and games perform better on certain cards. So choose the type of game you are most likely to play. Also there's varying settings to choose from depending on how you want to run them.

Oh, and seen as no one has said. ATI and Nvidia are the designers yes. The manufacturers who distribute them use the same designs. However the price difference between them can usually be an indication of support. Top manufacturers like BFG provide good warranties. Often you can get your card replaced, or even something better in the future if you have issues. Cheaper distributors don't offer these things, but are cheaper.

Also there is a difference in the coolers sometimes too. Personally I'd pay £20 extra and go with something with a good warranty. Oh and don't get second hand off Ebay, I learnt the hard way twice :D

A GTS 250 or 4870 are the best options around £100, but it's really worth forking out £20-£30 extra as it really makes a difference.

Thanks for all the replys guys! too much choice the prices are all so closely matched
think im swinging towards the 260 atm,

im stalling on proceeding with the checkout at the minute..... ha

The 4890 beats the 260 in pretty much every benchmark FYI ;)

Ummm..
The 4870 is on par with the GTX260 and can be had for 70 if you know where to look, the 4890 can be had for like 100 and beats the GTX260..

4870 if you 'have' to spend £100, but recommend paying a bit more and getting a 4890.
