Best GPU upgrade for me to game at 1440p?

My current specs are in my sig but I'm looking at upgrading my monitor to a 1440p panel and so I was wondering what my best course of action is with regards to my graphics card to game at that resolution?

I'd ideally like to avoid having to change my PSU or motherboard and so wondered what card I should be looking at?

I generally play games such as Elite Dangerous and the odd FPS but nothing serious!

Any suggestions?
 
I do and I'm certainly open to getting a 2nd hand card - would all of the models you mention comfortably game at 1440p then?
 
Any idea if all of these cards will run OK on my PSU and mobo? (I'm aware that I'll need to do a motherboard bios update for a 970/290 to work!)
 
I'm thinking that the 980's and the 390x's might be bit pricey tbh - got to fund the monitor upgrade too!

So I'm guessing it comes down to a straight choice between the 970 and the 290x??

For 1440p I would go for the 290X.

The 970 when over 3.5Vram (Which I managed at 1080p even) reduces performances hence why OcUK offered refunds on customers who were unhappy/experiencing the issue.

I also believe the 290X at 1440p comes into it's own at 1440p.

I'm interested in a 1440p monitor but trying to wait for the prices to come down, could I ask which monitor you have in mind? Without derailing the thread.

I've been considering the BenQ GW2765HT - after receiving some advice in my thread here

It appears to tick all the boxes without being overly expensive but I've not had too much feedback on it on here so far! (decent reviews elsewhere though!)

Thanks for all of the advice guys - I think I'm leaning towards the R9 290X!
