Best GPU upgrade for me to game at 1440p?

I grabbed a 970 for same resolution, they can handle it fine without loads of anti aliasing and are quieter + lower power than the equivalent AMD chips. If I wanted the best bang for my buck, i'd have probably picked up a R290x but a slightly slower card that makes less noise fits me better.

@ 1440 my choice would be 290/x . power draw is nothing, works out less than a penny an hour to run more than a 970.

dont care about penny an hour, it's about temps in the case and noise. 970 is easier to live with though i'll have to say if you stress the card it's for sure not silent.

My MSI 290x gaming is very quiet, only gets audible when in game and I can only just hear it tbh when it does spin up, otherwise totally unobtrusive.

So would you say something like the Powercolor Radeon R9 290X PCS+ OC 4096MB would be a better option all together cooler-wise?

I have the PCS+ 290; and its a lot quiter than my old 7870LE; that thing got noisy cranked up.......the core also did 1200 :D but usually had to have the fan like at 75% :)

Its a beast of a card and runs everything I throw at her...PCS+ Tri-X Vaper-X; lightning you can't go wrong with....

Not sure what to do. Either buy a 980 or wait for the 390? Only on 1080p but plan to upgrade my monitor soon to 1440. When will the new nvidia cards come out? I don't want to buy a 980 then the price will drop!

Trouble is, you can play this game endlessly - there will always be something cheaper tomorrow!

If you are comfortable at 1080 now I'd wait until you get your new monitor before looking at a new GPU - for one thing you could end up going down FreeSync/G-Sync route and might need a specific card to get the best out of it!

For my part I think I've decided on the 290X but I'm just struggling to decide between the MSI Radeon R9 290X LE Gaming Edition and the Powercolor Radeon R9 290X PCS+ OC for the supposedly superior cooling for an extra £20!?!?!

In reality I'm unlikely to overclock the GPU so is the better cooling worth it if I'm leaving everything at stock??

Yeah suppose you could always say it will be cheaper in the future. I would wait but I returned my 970 so I don't have a gpu at the moment. Will probably get a 980 today then upgrade the monitor to a 1440 gsync

I went from a MSI 970 to the MSI 290X LE currently at 1080p until I can fund a new 1440p Free Sync monitor or just when I have a selection to choose from.

What I noticed at this resolution 1080p the 290X is a couple of FPS behind the 970 however the GPU utilisation is always maxed out where as I noticed drops on the 970 resulting in an overall smoother gaming experience on the 290X in my eyes and my opinion whilst being cheaper.

At 1440p the 290X closes the gap and comes into it's own.

I do miss how COOL and QUIET the 970 admittedly the 290X is the loudest thing in my case when gaming if you have the money and care lots about noise spend the extra £20 and get a superior cooler and a higher core clocked card and also a higher memory clock card which will perhaps close the FPS difference between the 970 at stock.

However if you want best value for money and don't mind a little noise (It's not stupidly loud just an average GPU under load tbh) then go for the 290X MSI and thrash some games and forget about it!!! :D

Edit: I also went for the MSI 290X due to it's beastly looks suiting my cases colour scheme and think I paid like £229 when on offer. (Obviously each to their own)

Skip to 5:15 and check how it compares with a 980 GTX (£200 MORE than the 290X) This made me feel better that I didn't originally spend the extra on a 980. (at 1440p.)

Thanks for all the suggestions - I've still not 100% decided (even had a moment of madness thinking about ignoring my budget and going for a 2nd hand GTX 980!!!)

To be fair I've been astounded by how well my GTX670 is coping with gaming at 1440p - Elite: Dangerous works fine and it even seems to be managing Dying Light pretty well!!!!
