Hi,

I want a new card to work with 3d Modelling and Unreal game Dev work, i currently have a GTX 1080. ideally i'd like to get a 5080 24gb Super but that could be a good 8 - 12 months away. so i am considering buying a Nvida RTX card to plug that gap for 3D and Unreal 5 work. Once the 5080 comes out i'll sell it and buy that. i am wondering what inexpensive card as a stop gap i should get that will do everything i want and hold its value so i can put the money eventually to a 5080 super.

The other option is i just suck it up and wait. :(

This whole generation has been a bit "meh". Don't think any of them will particularly "hold their value". Maybe just buy something reasonable but cheap(ish) - 16GB 5060Ti. Decent step-up from what you have, and unlikely to lose you bajillions of pounds like a more expensive card.

I do 3D rendering in Vray and there's such a huge jump in performance going to RTX. My "Rendering" card history has been:

Titan X (Pascal) Was rubbish
2080ti Though not much better for gaming, the rendering was really decent uplift.
3090 Huge improvement
4090 Insane iimprovement
5090 Not tested it yet

The biggest up in performance was the 4090 that was nearly double the 3090 in RTX rendering. RAM is deffo a big issue though for rendering and you really want more than 16GB.

You just missed the boat as yesterday I sold my 3090FE for £400, that is a great 3D Rendering card. Took a nice picture of the 3090FE, 4090FE & 5090FE together

TBH it might be too big for my SFF case Meshlicious anyway. but yeah looks mint as you say.

If I had to be new, I'd agree with that. The 5060 Ti 16GB. You can get them under £400 and being nvidia, a Ti and 16GB will always hold some interest on the used market.

The 5070 is a good (performing) card, but £500 is a lot for 12GB and if a 18GB Super comes out that will crush demand for the 4070/5070.

Probably going to get a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 Ti. however is it worth the extra £70-80 for a OC version really whats the benefit here? i am guessing its not worth it.

anyway going from a GTX 1080 FE to a 5060 TI should be a huge update for 1440p work and play.

The other thing for me is cooling and noise, looking at the Gigabyte options i am pretty tempted to go for the 3 fan model for better cooling for an extra £60. all the cards should fit in my SFF Mechilious case.
The 2 fan cards kinda worries me on cooling, i hate idle noise when working on projects. Gaming not so much. Does anyone have any info on the Cooling and noise level between all the Gigabyte card varients?

At idle they're likely to have fan stop on all models anyway (I haven't checked!), so if you're not doing much it should spin down. If you're doing projects that lightly use the GPU, then a larger, superior cooler can sometimes help prevent an annoying spin up/spin down situation. Not sure I'd be able to judge how much less of a problem that would be from reviews, though TPU do give idle temps and show you the cooler and the card's weight.

That's good to know. I think i need to buy this for my work, and just take the hit with knowing eventually i'll resell it and take a loss. looks to be around a 3080 performance (10% less) without the Cuda cores which is a shame. Rather disappointed that there are less Cuda cores than a 5 year old card. :(

Gah! 5060ti 16gb or a 5070 12gb.... so many pros and cons

5060 ti
+ move vram ( better for Unreal5 work / better resell value)
+ better for games bottle necking with the 16gb off loading to ram
- Slower card than the 5070 (-38%)
+ slightly cheaper

5070
+ faster card (+38%)
+ bigger bus + better realtime performance in UE5 (lumen / Nanite) and 3D apps and more cuda cores
- a little more expensive
- 12gb
- 5070 18gb Super might drop intrest for resale come the end of the year.

For me, the difficulty you have here is that you're trying to buy a stopgap, but you want it to do everything you want from the card you're going to buy later.

If that were true, there would be no point buying that card.

Sooo... I would say: either just buy a card that is suited to what you want (probably a 5070 Ti) and don't buy the 5080 Super, or buy a cheaper stopgap (e.g. used 3080?).

That said, if you need this for your work, how much is 12 months usage worth to you? If a better card and more productivity is going to make you money, maybe a few hundred £ is not the question.

when i say work i mean personal portfolio work, so in the long run it might help get a better job.
Yeah you are correct i really cant decide atm. usually there is a stand out choice to me and i just buy that but as i have shown above there are positive and negative.
i partly blame Nvidia for the Lack luster specs this generation ( and last) with no clear winner and certianly no value for money.

These vids might help from a creators perspective.

Thank Legion, tbh Tech Notice is pretty useless. Hardware Canucks does far better comparisons for creators at different resolutions and more apps i use.

I'll have a think about it this week, still rather disappointed with this generation tbf.
