My friend just asked what's the best gpu he could get for £400, so I thought I'd put it on here see what you guys think ?

If he could save a bit more, then go for the 780Ti. Around £480 is the starting point for them.

Thing is, if you are going to be spending THAT much on a graphics card, may as well save that bit more and get the best.

Its the old battle of the GTX 780 vs the R9 290.

Yes the 290X is in budget but 100% not worth the extra over the non-X.

The faster card is the 290 but the R9's still have their black screen and driver issues.

The 780 is a solid choice but more expensive and maybe slower..

AMD R9 290 for around the £330 mark. Getting one with a very good third party cooler is essential

The 780GTX will trade punches with it but it's around £40-£50 more expensive.

The 780Ti is a powerhouse of a card but nearly £500

Tell him to have a look here and compare a few cards for himself

Cheers I'll get him to have a look ! I have Just bought an msi r9 270x and can't decide weather to xfire or not ? I'm looking to upgrade my rig in about 2 years anyway so I can't decide if I should save my money or not :( I've been told 2 of these would equal the r9 290 performance wise ?? Decisions decisions haha ...

For what it's worth, the introduction of Mantle and FreeSync have kept me with AMD, very interesting and promising next gen tech!

Aftermarket R290 in your price bracket for me.

I'm with the big man 8Pack.

290X AIB card for £400. In a league of its own.

Or if you don't mind a few less fps you can get an absolute bargain on the best 290 card going for £320.

780's can't really compete on price or performance with either of those. 290X will be faster than the 780 and the 290 will be evenly matched with a 780 but £80 cheaper.

You didn't state what you intended to use the card for but assuming like most of us it's for Gaming rather than benchmarking then there isn't any noticeable difference between the 780 and the 290 therefore if I assume it's for gaming at 1080 then get the GTX780 over the 290.

Why the 780? If going for no noticeable difference then surely whichever is cheaper with a cooler that is good enough should be chosen (so probably an aftermarket 290)
