Hi all,

Im currently looking for the best money can buy chip set aswel as a motherboard.

So far I have seen a I7 6700k @ 4.0ghz and the GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-GAMING G1 INTEL Z170 (SOCKET 1151) DDR4 EATX MOTHERBOARD.

Im looking to get clock speeds of 4.5min at least.

Any other inputs pointing me in another direction with a "money no object" kinda thing wpuld be greatly appriciated

Thankyou in advance

If money is no object x99 and a 5820k might be better, especially if you're going with more than one gpu. Not sure if you'd be able to get the 5820k to 4.5 with ease though, others will probably be able to give you more info on that.

If money is no object then an X99 i7 5960X is the flagship. You can even get a J batch, binned CPU from 8 Packs stock on the OCUK website but it will set you back 1k.

The X99 i7 5930k is next one down but is still more powerful than the i7 6700K. It has more cache and cores and can support 40 PCIE lanes.

6700k will max out any game and not hold back any card setup as far as I'm aware, getting anything more expensive on an X99 setup would be silly unless you just want to know you have more cores/or quad channel ram... Or you just have so much money you want the best of the best! :P

6700k actually performs better in some games that the 5960x
At stock clocks, yea.

But in quite a few benchmarks I've seen, if you're not GPU-limited, the 5960X actually does usually hold the best performance, sometimes by a good margin.

Of course, not being GPU limited depends on the game and your GPU setup. If you've got dual 980Ti's, a 5960X will probably get you pretty nice gains in a bunch of games at 1080p for instance. Of course if you've got dual 980Ti's, you're probably running a high res monitor and so might actually be right back to being GPU-limited again....

6700k is probably the best value high end gaming CPU right now. If you really want more than 4 cores, the 5820k is a good choice for not much more money.

explain to me why x99?

right now core for core skylake is the fasting thing on the market.
i went from 5930k to 6600k and it has to be i5, i7 skylake for me.

Because if he's going money-no-object with many GPUs X99 has the lanes for it (I'd stick to 5930k for the clock speed over the extra cores of the 5960X - sometimes the extra cores would win out but sometimes slightly higher clocks would, it's a tough call which is absolutely better)

If he's single GPU then skylake makes sense. (I'd still go 6600k over 6700k personally as the gains are small but for the OP I guess 6700k as who cares about the extra expense and HT can be turned off if it's holding the max clocks back for games that only use a couple of threads anyway)

Personally I'd never go multi-GPU (well, never is a long time but with how multi-GPU works at the moment I'd not touch it) but for absolute max performance at any price it is the fastest overall.

(I'm ignoring the quad-channel DDR4 of X99 as it doesn't make much difference for now anyway and the Skylake IMC apparently can get slightly higher frequencies helping reduce the deficit anyway)

So for single card setups, Skylake is preferable over X99? Would you consider upgrading from 4790k as worthwhile?

I've got some cash going spare, but not sure if upgrading my CPU is worth it. OP, I hope you find this relevant.

I recently moved over from a 4790k at 4.7ghz to a 5820k setup at 4.5ghz. In what I'm playing its pretty much a cooler running sidegrade. Perhaps though with DX12 and new games we will see better use of extra cores.

I went from a 3770k to a 5930k and to be honest. I've noticed no difference at all.
But. I wasn't running the two Titan-x when I had the 3770k so it's probably not relevant.

Are you also going for the best-money-can-buy GPUs and monitor(s)? The CPU you get depends on these, and also the games you play.

A £1000 CPU with a mid-range GPU would be silly.

I currently have 2x 980ti's with 2 asus 4K predator screens and have noticed a drop in fps and processing speed since my 1st gen i7 ain't cutting it anymore.

That money no object was to see what people would "love" to have and I've now seen that the new ain't always the best for certain situations.

That being said I'm after a solid rig but still fairly new when it comes to overclocking. Built rigs before no problem yet I've been out of the loop for 2years and the new sky lake being the new kid on the block looks the part but I'm after people's real opinions whether it really is like "**** off a shovel"

Cheers gents

Do you mean Acer ?

When I said I noticed no difference going to X99, I meant during normal PC usage.
I doubt my old 3770k rig would have handled the SLI Titan-X's as well.

X99 has a lot of benefits. Onboard M2 slot for 4xPCIE SSD's, DDR4, 40 PCIE lanes on the 5930 and 5960. They're all little things but when you put them together.........

I see. Probably worth going for a 6 core X99 then for a substantial upgrade.

The folks at maximumpc tested their 980 Tis with an i7-5930K, that's probably the sort of level you should be aiming for. Maybe worth waiting for Broadwell-E, there's a recent thread on it.

If you've already sunk £2k-ish into graphics and monitors you're probably not too tempted to cut corners for the sake of a few hundred £ (Skylake).

It's true that I have sunk quite a bit into my visual side of my rig but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with regards to upgrading the rest.

I could wait for the next upcoming chip but again it would be out of date a few months later, typical rat race.

I've had a look at the x99 and I'm impressed with it and will likely go down that road however I've noticed a few of the x99 so what are people pointing at when it comes to the x99 ( please link ).

As for the chip I'm gonna go with the 6700k as I need to learn to overclock and this seems like a good chip to play with, once happy with that I'm sure I'll ask you lot again what to go for as the knowledge in here is vast.

Thanks again
