I myself am running a nice SATA raptor 10k, but my brother's computer is still a bit behind and can only suppot IDE. He won't be upgrading for a while but really needs a faster HD than he has allready. So what is the best IDE hard drive between 50-150gb space (He really doesn't need any more) that he could buy.

Any suggestions anyone?

I am running a mixture of WD/Samsung (SpinPoint)/Maxtor/Seagate drives.

I have not tried Hitachi - although I have had IBM drives.

If it were me (buying for somebody else) I think I would go for the 200Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 at £48.95 + VAT as it's only £4.00 +Vat more than the 160Gb version

Thanks for the input guys, though I'm not worried about what brand in particular. I was asking which is the fastest hard drive that IDE has to offer for around the 40-50 quid mark.

Western Digital Caviar SE range is good, I have the 200GB and gives an Average read in HD Tach of almost 53MB/s, also quiet. ;)

Edit:

As already stated best to avoid Maxtor.
