Very true , though with HT and 4 threads. :) Quad would be better in my opinion.

However trying to give him the "cheapest" viable option without spending lots of money on old tech.

Performance wise for what he wants , i would doubt there is much more he could get than that of an i3.
 
If new then -

I3 @2.93 - £93
Q8400 @2.66ghz - £133

Sell your E8500 and get a Q9550 @2.83ghz. Clock it in future to 3.7ghz + and being quad will also be a lot more future proof....

Or just sell up and go I5
 
I was about to build a 775 quad core new build. I thought it would be cheap by now. That was until I realised decent 775 mobos are still fetching the best part of £75 used or ex demo. There are still 775 mobos @ £200+. There are some cheap and really good 775 processors about (e6750s are still going for upwards of £50 though), but ddr2 is about the same price as ddr3, so I felt I was robbing peter to pay paul.

The tech will last longer. When I come to upgrade the mobo to a sata / usb 3 system, I won't be needing to buy new RAM, and maybe not even a cpu.

The socket 1156 Asus p7xxx are the same price (or less) than a socket 775 p5kxx or p5qxx, the RAM is the same price or thereabouts, you're only saving <£100 if you choose a used Q9550 (if you get a good deal on it, or whatever 775) over a new i5, less if you go i3.

My i5 new build is coming in @ £500. I would have saved 20% by going used 775 mobo/processor. That's rubbish.

Its old, but still reasonably good tech so new 775 stuff is still a bit expensive

Look in the right place and you can upgrade for cheap to 775 second hand. I went from 939 setup with 2gb to 775 setup with 4gb for about £100

By the time i have sold all my 939 bits and pieces it will have probably cost me £70

So the OP is clear what many are beginning to say here.

You can buys 775 parts and make a pretty decent system with them. There is no doubt and no body will argue with the facts.
But due to the still excessively high prices on the 775 hardware , for possibly 10-20% more investment you could get brand new released components.
Problem is when funds are tight then anything extra becomes a problem. I personally understand that and i am sure other do too.

With this to light its why i sort of pointed out the i3 setups. Yes its only dual with HT and wont compete with quad core but its new tech , with the new socket , new memory etc. If it were myself looking to do this then i know how i would analyse the build route.

Aye, my £500 all in though is all in. Case, PSU, GPU, RAM, fans, mobo, CPU cooler, rubber fan pins ;). If you're doing that... buying used 775 RAM, mobo and CPU, I found I was only saving about £100.
