Howdy,

Wow, a thread not related to the iPhone I hear you mutter, correct... although I do mention it below :)

I currently have a iPod Video (30GB) that does everything perfectly, apart from when I'm at the gym. It will sometimes crash and I would have to do to a reset to get it back in action again. This doesn't always happen, and is very random at the times it does it. But I have had enough of that and want to get a iPod that ideally won't do this.

I have an iPhone 3G, but I don't plan on using that down the gym. The shuffle is too small (file size wise I mean) so is no good, so is the iPod nano the best way to go? Would you use that down the gym? Or does it also cut off after a bit of shaking?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

My 3rd gen Nano is fine road and cross-country/trail running. It's flash memory, so I'd hate to think what you'd have to do to make it skip.

If a shuffle is too small then you are either using a compression / bit rate that isn't warranted for a device as poor as the shuffle, or you're over training.

I've got a shuffle and an iphone and I use the shuffle for half marathons. Plenty of space and battery.

However, the nano should also be fine. I use to have one of the previous gen and I never had a problem with it when exercising.

I use the shuffle for running and gym, its ideal tbh, small enough to not be a nuisance and all you have to do is press play...

Sometimes you get a right classic on when you struggling up a hill and it spurs you on :)

surprises are nice running

Well I always have my ipod on shuffle anyway, but I want to have my whole music collection on there so that the shuffle is more random. I don't want to keep changing what tracks I put on there depending on what I do at the gym that day... I think the skipping on the iPod video would be less annoying than that :) So 2GB is just not big enough really. Whereas 8GB would be more than good enough!

Well then, just get a big fat ipod...

Doesnt really matter they all fit in pockets, or you can always strap it on :)

I just got a touch and they are class, Id recommend anyone getting an ipod to get a touch, just a cut above

its a shame you didnt say best mp3 player because you'd be open to a lot more options then.

yeah...they arent really ideal for gym use lol. i dont know about you but i couldnt run on a treadmill with my iphone in my pocket. having the thing in my pocket when lifting weights is a pain in the arse as well.

perhaps the op could consider a sansa express. no nonsense, great sansa sound quality, not much larger than an AA battery and the 2gb version is £10. but.......it also has a micro sd slot, and micro sd cards are cheap.

Yeah get an iPod they're the best mp3 player for using at the gym.

Light weight and fit in your pocket fine. A Nano is probably your best bet.

Aye i know, thats why i have a shuffle :p

All im saying is they all fit in your pocket, but might be a nuisance. I personally think for gym and running whatever the shuffle is the best choice, i mean you dont go to the gym to play with an ipod, i just like to press play and get on with it

1st gen shuffle with the lanyard has been the best I've used at the gym. But since that broke I've been using my 2nd gen nano which does the trick, only downsides is that I have to take it out of my pocket to change songs, and I have to wear shorts with pockets. The shuffle was just a simple button press on my chest :)

Could you not have a smart playlist that will only create a random playlist of 700mb for the shuffle? Each time it accesses it, the playlist would then randomise from the library anyway?

Just a thought

The Sansa doesn't work on a Mac (last time I checked anyway) which is a shame, as they seem to be really good players from what people say.

Just thought I'd mention, I grabbed a 2GB Shuffle in the end, I wasn't aware of the autofill option that lets me randomly select tracks from my collection which is cool. The shuffle is a pretty cool device, and am very impressed with it overall! It will only be used for the gym though, the iphone 3g/ipod video will be used for less active listening.

Oh god I can't stand my touch at the Gym, too heavy and I can't reach in my pocket to skip a song with it.

I use an iPod nano (1st gen with Nike+) at the gym and its fine. Wouldn't even consider using my iPhone.

Saying that, I used to use a 1st gen iPod with a huge marware strap on case a few years back. Thats huge in comparison to the modern iPods.... I got a little bit of skipping when I was running very fast and the buffer struggled to keep up.

Don't try running with an iPhone. I keep thinking it's going to fall out of my pocket so end up holding it. Annoying but does the job.

I use a 2nd Gen Nano with Nike armband. I had the Apple armband but it fell to pieces.

I'm considering getting Nike+ for it so I can track my runs and things.
