Best ISP For Gaming And Torrents?

What do people mean by shaping ?

They mean traffic shaping which is where your ISP is prioritising certain types of traffic over others. The most common shaping ISP's do is on peer to peer traffic such as bitorrent. US ISP's started doing it a while ago but there is an increasing number of UK ISP's doing it now.

Would it be worth switching from Virgin Media over to an ADSL provider like Be?

Virgin has just started their new traffic management where if you're on the 4MB package you get bumped down to 1MB after downloading 350MB between 4 and 9pm, but I live pretty far from my telephone exchange and can only get 1MB ADSL anyway :/

Edit: the ping i used to get with CSS = 30-50ms then I CALLED bt and requested to swtich off my interleave i am getting 10-17ms max now :) I m getting 9ms at TF2 and i can get minimum of 15ms with COD4 and i can get 7ms with ping www.bbc.co.uk at cmd line
Explain please, i am with BT Option 3 have been for like 5 years and been brilliant(when i havnt had to use CS), but the bit i bolded sounds interesting.

Interleaving increases the connection reliability but at the expense of latency (ping).

Wikipedia said:
Interleaving is used in digital data transmission technology to protect the transmission against burst errors. These errors overwrite a lot of bits in a row, so a typical error correction scheme that expects errors to be more uniformly distributed can be overwhelmed. Interleaving is used to help stop this from happening.

when you apply for new connection to entanet how long it takes in the real life? (i am not counting BT 2 days to fix me a new phone number)
day ,two?

I would have to say Virgin media as well i get a constant 20Mbit when downloading from newsgroups with giganews, always...
As for the fair usage policy, has anyone else with virgin noticed that the throttling has not been active the last few weeks?
I used to get hit with it all the time, but recently has not happened at all, just wondering if it has been reelaxed a bit.

Get absolutely murdered here and that's not even downloading more than 2gb a month. Every weekend I can barely browse at times. Reported this but nothing ever happens. The service is appalling. I'd personally recommend going with anyone else other than Virgin.

Yeah they really don't seem to be that good a service any more, some people would say they never were :p

Must be area specific then, like I said 20Mbit constant download speed always here.
Been with them for coming on 4-5 years and can count on one hand the number of times I have had a problem.

I'm with Pipex and they are terrible for me. A few disconnections every night. Definite throttling, torrents don't work more than 5kbps, even with encryption.
Changing at first opportunity.

Same here, they used to be good but these days they are poor.

Ive just checked and BE is availible in my area :D

I will be having a chat with my dad about changing over, I'l pay the bill if it comes to it :p

Are you contracted to a certain period with Pipex or can you sling it when ever you want?

Ah, we hav'nt done that. We offically get 2.2mb, well we should be we never see that or no where near that.

Stupid FUP.

Hopefully in the coming days I can sort something out and get over to Be :)

A while ago we upgraded speeds at no extra cost from 2Mb to 8Mb and by doing that you automatically sign up for another year. Bummer

I've done a Pipex regrade, and locked in to a new one year contract. Regretting it now due to poor speeds.

Have you found where to check usage in account pages? Can't believe there isn't an option to check how much bandwidth has been used.
