Best looking game relative to release date?

I was going to say Populous 1989.
But Wing Commander came out in 1990.
And Lander/Zarch on the Archemedes was 1987.

Elite on the BBC 1984.

Sony/Saga Archade machines in the early 90s were pretty awe inspiring at first.

Sega Rally

personally i think freelancer is pretty immense when ur in space. phantasy star online when i first saw it on my brothers dreamcast blew my mind. i also think zelda twilight princess on gamecube was the best looking console game of the time.

The games that stick in my mind are Quake GL on my 3DFX voodoo 1 which was stunning as it was totally in 3D - no sprites in 3D backgrounds.

And also I had just got a Geforce 8800 GTS 640 and on this card The Lost Planet was just truly stunning at the time. I thought I was watching a movie at first and then I realised - **** thats the actual game engine! Even though the game sucked I really enjoyed wandering round and checking all the cool crazy aliens and it ran really smooth too. And the game engine cutscenes that I had no idea my PC was powerful enough to produce.
