Best looking game relative to release date?

Nascar Racing 2003 was pretty good though:

Looks kinda Homeworldy, Been looking at this for a while does it work similar to home world?

Not really like Homeworld, you only control a small number of battleships and have missions to follow. It is about micromanaging your ships capabilities, choosing specific weapons to target enemy shields/engines etc. The story is very good as well and the missions are very well concieved(except the stealth ones imo)

I discussed the game a bit in this thread-

I remember getting pretty het up over this in 2007

Game engine was ace back then but the later productions in the COD series used an updated engine ... oh wait ...

The original Unreal was incredible when it first came out. Everything about it was a cut above anything else at the time. Playing it on voodoo 2 SLI was gaming heaven :D I think that's the one that really stands out for me.

It was epic standing in the moonlight with ambient sounds of hawks :)

you're not wrong there - the combat system was brilliant :)

Very good game, would love to see another like it. The combat was quite impressive, and with a little more interactivity in the game world or a few minor improvements it would be even better. I remember seeing the shadows for the first time when a friend loaded it up and being amazed at how good they were.

I like the moment just after twenty two minutes. :D

In fact watching a few moments again makes me realise just how good the fighting was. It really does give a 'feel' of the arduous nature of swordsmanship.

Edit : after having just played some of the demo again, I'd say the combat is still quite enjoyable but the unsurprising effect of ten years has a made a difference to the clunky movement / interface, though it was always an issue in some respect anyway. Worth playing though just for the combat, even if you don't bother completing it.

my vote goes to Far Cry and Crysis. Crytek are always top trumps when it comes to pushing the boundries in my opinion.

though for consoles Metal Gear Solid II, was a massive enormous leap from the first game and Killzone II, what the? a PS3 game that stamps all over most PC games, how is this possible?!

Depends how close you are to the monitor.
Uncharted 2 is a brilliant looking game........ Until you get up close, so much aliasing etc.

a computer shop near me used to have quake 3 running 24/7 and i was always amazed with how fast and smooth it looked , it seemed light years ahead of consoles and most other games

I thought Quake 3's visuals at the time were pretty immense (1999), especially textures and lighting effects.

Q3 engine is exceptional because it scales very well with hardware, personally I preferred the look of UT at the time though, I think the art style was more to my tastes.

Not a bad shout, probably the best looking racer at the time but maybe just tiny bit blocky.

really surprised to see no mention of F.E.A.R yet, i remember cranking that game up to max settings my rig would run and my jaw dropped.

FEAR was the best looking game at the time of its release IMO; however it came a year after FC/D3/HL2 and I didn't feel it quite raised the bar enough to make it stand out.

As for Serious Sam I was in awe of the engine, massive open spaces with huge numbers of 3d monsters, annoying sort of graphics in that you can't really post screenshots/vids to showcase it, they tend to look fairly average, but no other game could do what it did to the scale it did it. 90% of FPS games have you facing a max of about half a dozen monsters at once, whereas in SS it can be 10x that number.

Not strictly a game but I'd agree with the early 3dmark suggestions, 3DM2000 has helicopter and city scenes, 3DM2001 has the matrix bit, to be honest I think in some ways 3dmark got worse as it got older in terms of the types of scenes they were showing, better graphics maybe but just boring to watch for the 50th time.

GTA San andreas, just because of the amount of stuff in it. I can't remember any other game at the time that had a freeroam map that large and graphics that good /waits for someone to correct me lol

Plus of course most of the Gran Turismo series but not sure that counts in here...

Another vote for Shenmue, for a 1999 game my god its awesome.

Oblivion was another great looking game considering its scale and its age now.
