okay, so currently i own a Coolermaster 'silent pro' M850 psu...my motherboard is the Asus Rampage 2 Gene, and my video card is the Radeon 5870 eyefinity6... of particular note is that my PSU specifies 66A on the 12v line, and when i run HWMonitor i can see that the Volterra VT1165 (the voltage regulator on my Radeon 5870) is reporting more than 74A being drawn

furthermore, the +12v is being shown as 11.49v, i suppose that is a little low and probably the reason behind all the system freezes i've had when i was running GPU and CPU folding simultaneously?

so im asking you guys, is there a better PSU out there , which is also modular... i was thinking simply getting the next one up, the Coolermaster M1000 , but do you guys have any suggestions?

Unless you've got a faulty PSU an 850W CM silent pro should be more than enough for a single 5870 plus any other components.... I wouldn't really trust that 74A reading tbh.

ah... so you think that my current PSU ought to be alright, then?

just been looking at MSI afterburner's GPU voltage graph, and it seems that there are these downward spikes , momentary voltage dropoffs... i suspect that it might be the cause of the instability

I would say the best PSU's currently are the Seasonic X-650 or X-750.

I have the X-650, and it's running passive in my system with very little heat given off. It's just day and night to any other PSU i've owned in this regard. Other than that the voltages are some of the most stable currently out there.
