i was going to get
Iiyama ProLite E2407HDS 24 inch TFT LCD Monitor

i posted in another section of this forum and i was recommended the Dell U2312HM, i was only going to spend 150 on a monitor, but if im going to buy a 7970 i might juggle some of the other things in my build (or borrow more money from friends lol) to get a better monitor that would be suited to gaming/playing blu-ray movies, it seems a shame to spend £150 when maybe for an extra 50-100 i could get something that would be much more suited

i am not a regular gamer, but i do intend to be once i get a decent system built

+1 for the U2412M if you can afford it - it is an E-IPS panel, 24in, 1920x1200 resolution monitor which gets a really good write up (see here) and a lot of really positive user feedback.

If you only want to spend £200 then the U2312HM is an excellent option (here is a review), its a bit smaller and lower resolution than the U2412M but it is still a really good monitor and if anything it is a bit more responsive than the U2412M (though the 24in is still perfectly good for playing most games on).

The other option for around this price is a 23in 120Hz TN panel monitor (something like the ASUS VG236H/VG236HE) which offers smoother feeling motion in fast paced games and really excellent responsiveness - though compared to the Dells mentioned above the image quality and viewing angles are not on the same level.

If you are not primarily playing fast-paced games then I would go for the IPS monitor over the 120Hz one.

to be honest i havnt been a gamer for many years on a pc, but someone told me that pcs massively out perform consoles ( i honestly wasnt aware of this - please dont be too cruel to me for being stupid) and ive been advised to try games like crysis amongst others on a pc, so ive no idea how fast paced the games will be i intend to play, but if i get more time i intend to do a lot of gaming hopefully :D

thanks for the replies

Unlike consoles PC games are actually expected to run at Full HD (or higher) nowadays. So yes, PCs are quite a bit more powerful (which isn't surprising considering the age of the PS3/Xbox 360).

Borderline on the OC UK forum regulations, but if you're strapped for cash. ** SO you know the rules then but chose to ignore ** Not to mention mainland monitor prices tend to be lower in general.

my sincerest appologies if i broke the rules:o

ok with my buld coming ever closer with ivybridge due out soon, and with the 10 percent off from over clockers, i was just wondering if its still the same ( i know technology moves on)

mainly using the monitor for watching blu rays and gaming, possibly a bit of photo editing by the wife (amateur really, but wanting to be a pro), and also to occasionally play console on if possible

i suppose the budget is less than 300 but preferably less than 250 (i could stretch to 300 if need be, esp as there will be 10 percent off, will be easier to talk the wife around with a its a bigger saving argument i suppose :D)

Cheers mate, is that Loads better than the benq xl2410t ? Ideally I'd like something with unbuilt sound as otherwise I'd need to buy a new amp for my old separates

I'd say so, as it's an IPS panel so very good image quality - check cmndr_andi's first post which has a review

Why not get some cheap speakers instead? They'd be much better than inbuilt ones and they needn't be expensive:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-151-CL&groupid=702&catid=22&subcat=1920

With speakers could I hook them up so anything that went through tv would have sound ( ie the pc, the xbox etc without having to switch wires? ) just trying to work out what I could do

And I'm probably going for a 680 now as opposed to a 7970 as I think they are slightly better ?
This is the most expensive thing I've bought In many years and It will probably be the last "toy" I get for a very long time so I want it to be special and last me a long time

If you getting a GTX680 then get a BenQ XL2420T.

I had one of the best 24 inch IPS monitors(HP LP2475W which still is) and the gaming difference is a lot better.Sure you may lose viewing angles but it's not a big deal as you always infront of the screen and colours aren't much worse....they are close to what my IPS was now i've calibrated it aswell as adjusted the Nvidia Vibrancy to 60%.

The Samsung monitor i linked is your best bet for a gaming monitor if going for a 7970 but do not forget the 7950 overclocked is till a nice choice too.

120hz is so so good for gaming.

Thanks mate, to be honest I'm so torn between the Dell ultrasharp and that benq , basically most the time we watch stuff on the pc, when I get the new one we are getting a Bly ray player on it, my bed is slightly to the right of the pc (probably between a 10 degree and 45 degree angle and metre or two away from pc <trying to be as accurate as possible to give u guys all the facts > I'd say the new build will be used for websurfing and movies 2/3 of the time and gaming 1/3) but I still want it to be decent for gaming for that price but I suppose both will be a step up from my 3 year old monitor anyway.

Anyway thank you all kindly for takin time to help me again

Yeah I'm trying to find a site where they perhaps directly compare performances whilst gaming, watching movies quality, etc .
Can someone answer my speaker query Earlier?

dell 2410 vs dell 2412m

whats the difference in lamens terms ? and as someone primarily using it for movies would it be worth the extra money? (bearing in mind i always will be using it for gaming/web browsing and possibly my wife photo editing etc)

please someone:P im hoping to buy it tonight:D
also given the more expensive one appears to have been around for longer, surely the technology is somewhat dated?

The main difference is that the U2410 supports an expanded colour gamut, while the U2412M is standard colour gamut. So long as you don't do image editing using an expanded colour space then the U2412M is fine.

The U2410 also has more video inputs and uses a H-IPS panel (compared to an E-IPS panel in the U2412M) - this generally means that the U2410 has a bit wider viewing angles, though the viewing angles on the U2412M are still good.

If you look at this tftcentral review of the U2412M they actually directly compare the U2412M and the U2410 in most areas.

Bottom line - for your uses the U2412M is the best option due to the lower cost and still excellent performance - but with slightly less features (which you may not use anyway).

thank you kindly sir:)

ordered the u2412m with my 10 percent off code, step one in my new build is now complete - thanks a lot guys really appreciate you helping me out

thanks for the recommendation, loving it
first impressions were excellent , certainly a step up on my 3 year old monitor, and thanks overclockers for the swift delivery

can anyone recommend what settings i should have it on ? (for colour brightness etc) ive done a search on this forum but cant find any?
