Ignore the "use you desk" crowd - they can't tell the difference because they have no skills in the first place![]()
Well to be fair in the modern age with optical mice the requirement for a quality mat isn't quite what it used to be (ignoring the compatibility problems one used to get e.g. early optical mice on white/glass mats).
I don't think there is any right or wrong answer as to what the best surface is, it depends a bit on personal preferance in terms of how much friction you like. For some people their desk may be ideal.
Bear in mind that I am speaking here as someone who has been buying gaming mats since the last millenium, in fact I remember when the whole concept of using a special mat for gaming hit (the 3m Precision Mousing Surface). Great idea but they were pretty much useless after 3 months due to wear and tear, plus curling up unless you stuck them down!
My current mat is a an Allsop raindrop that I've had for around 6 years or so. Very nice pad that I decided to get after using one at a clanmate's house. The foam is starting to decay a bit around the edges but it has served me well.
