I will be moving into a flat in july. What is the best uncapped broadband without getting a landline? We have mobiles and dont want a landline, plus it costs another £15 or £20 (i think)

We will probably be getting a Sky package (sports) but I havent heard anything about Sky broadband. Postcode is LS6 4ED

emm, i just read this on Sky page

A phone line is, however, mandatory if you are taking Sky Multiroom and you will need Sky Talk Line Rental or a BT compatible line to take Sky Broadband or Sky Talk

That sucks balls. Another £10 a month for something we wont use. Virgin media is rubbish.

Is the skybroadband max package worth £10 a month plus the £10/month line rental?

i think you have no choice if you want broadband, they all require a BT landline and yes it does suck balls ..

Sky landline is a tenner a month and 8mb unlimited broadband is another tenner. Would this be better/cheaper than getting a bt landline and a different broadband provider? (say O2)

a bt landline is £11 approx pm.

and O2 , depends if your an O2 customer already, i think they give discounts to existing customers and i would say yes, they are better than SKY.

Dont think tehres any ISPs over here do naked DSL.

Only option would be cable but wether they insist you take a line as part of your package Im not sure

Thanks, it would be cheaper and better than sky broadband then. All id need to do is get an o2 sim card right?

Marginally cheaper, £9.79pm for discounted O2 premium vs £10pm for Sky Max. And potentially faster, considering you're a relatively short distance from the exchange and may well sync at over 16mb.

All id need to do is get an o2 sim card right?
And top-up £10 every three months.

Isnt Sky max up to 20mb, ive just read it somewhere in a letter we got through from sky?
True, looks like they've just changed it: http://www1.sky.com/newnetwork/unlimited.html

Nothing really to differentiate Sky Unlimited and O2 Premium now. Both offer the same speeds, both are effectively unlimited services, both are interleaved (no real ping advantage with either). I'd be tempted to go with Sky just to have it all in one package and on the same bill.

Just get the landline and Sky Talk, then it's +£10 for their top BB product. So basically you'll be paying around £21 for unlimited 20mbit which seems pretty good to me (even if you never use the actual phone at all).

I had virgin and was running VOIP without a phoneline.

Unfortunately their service didn't work out too well due to throttling. I ended up moving back to bethere.

Might not be worthwhile as I can't find a naked dsl provider in London.

If you get sky TV you HAVE to have a landline anyway. So there is no getting around it. Just get sky landline rather than BT.

This is because the boxes update and verify over landline as well as some interactive services using landline.

Allso think hey have an offer on at the moment, free line rental if you get sky+Hd. but not entirely sure.

They have an offer where u get a free skyplus box until 25th june. Free line rental would be great with HD. It would effectively mean you are getting HD for free (instead of normal Sky plus)

I always heard good things about virgin, no one i know have had a problem.

Im on Bethere 24Mb connection and im getting an average of 5Mb, Id love to go on virgin :/

Its either Virgin or get a phoneline.

The fastest ADSL atm is 02 + Bethere. Bethere has a gaming mode and an optional static IP rather than 02, but they also have the worst phone support ive ever encountered.

Not had any real problems with my virgin setup.
Past few years I think theres been maybe an hour downtime and I lost enail access during a home move for a day or so.

Been rock solid other than these minimal cases above and Ive never really noticed the throttling that others seem to constantly complain about. Any large files I will Dl overnight rather than peak time, every now and again I may DL a large file during the day if I need/want it faster but even then never noticed any throttling. 20Mb is more than enough for most things, just wish there was an option of sacrifing a bit of DL for a bit of UL the 768UL is a pain when uploading large files :(

Thanks for all the replies.

I have been with virgin in the past and their customer service is appauling. I had a £30 phone call to their support, took weeks to come out and fix the broken tv signal and net, i sent them letters which they still havent responded to...
Virguin was/is fine until you have a problem, then they royally screw you

We will be getting Sky as the tv service is a lot better, if this requires a phone line then will just get a sky line too.

We might hammer the net in the day and we need unlimited service. Using google earth last night was shocking my orange downgraded 2mb line (512kb!)
