Best Netbook?

Can anyone tell me what the best Netbook is at the moment? I am looking for one with a very good quality screen, the glass sort of finish if you know what I mean?

I'll be installing Linux on it, I'd like it to have a high screen resolution as well if possible. I don't mind if it has a SSD or a HDD.

TIA.

They are pretty much all the same when it comes to screen quality - it's things like storage and keyboard size you should be looking at instead.

My money would go on the NC20 having played with one as it has a 1280x800 screen which blows 1024x600 out of the water IMHO.

Take a look at the HP Mini 702ea, very nice screen and has no bezel so looks bigger than it actually is. 1024x600 though is standard for most netbooks. The NC20 is quite a bit bigger..

apart from hardware compatibility and software variety?

Linux has a huge variety of software.

As for hardware compatibility, aren't all these current gen netbooks virtually the same hardware? The majority of them are available with Linux pre-installed so you'd have to assume the compatibility was up to scratch.

I've just got the HP 2133 for £199.99. I had a strict £200 budget so no NC10 for me. The downside is a Via C-7 rather than Atom but the upside is a 1280x768 screen and 120GB hard disk. It ships with SUSE LED 10 but I've already replaced that with Windows 7. Even with a mere 1.2 GHz C7 it's fast enough for browsing and downloading pics from my digital SLR so I don't need to take a full sized laptop in my camera bag anymore.

Got an eee-pc 1000 with Ubuntu-eee. No hardware problems here, printer, scanner etc. work fine and does all that I require of it. Not once have I thought.. "I wish was windows"

The distribution is absolutely superb, just put it onto a flash drive and everything just works, wifi, bluetooth office, mail, Gimp (read: photoshopish.) And its freeeeeee.

i just bought a medion akoya mini e1210 from local supermarket for £176.56 it was reduced from £299 to this price and its nationwide so try your local store. this seems to be a bargin at this price and staff get it for £158.54 with there discount -

"try something new today" Jamie Oliver rocks

ive tried a few but i cant say theres any real winner in the netbook game.. some of the most popular are almost the same, most of it is personal preference theres no shining star. I think the answer to "What is the best netbook?" is... it hasnt been made yet :) at the moment the trend of electronic devices is that its all heading towards a small pocket-sized full fledged computer that does it all. slowly were getting there :)

my vote is for the nc10 got it yesterday and its bloody amazing runs programs i wouldnt have thought on a netbook, keyboard is great to use and battery life is out of this world :D

The NC10 is a good Netbook but imo it's a little expensive, I have a Acer One and it's perfect for my uses, like as already been said Netbooks performance wise are on a pretty even field but the Acer looks good, is nice to use and very cheap. For around £200 you could buy a Acer One with 120GB HD and Upgrade it to 1.5GB Memory.

Having owned a Blue Acer One with 8GB SSD and Linux and a White One with 120GB i recommend the white One with the 120GB HD. There is a myth that you have to treat hard drives with kid gloves or they will break, Sure you have to be sensible about how you treat them.

I use my Acer for work and carry it in a bag along with my lunch and other bits. I wouldn't say it gets chucked about but i don't take extra special care of my bag and just treat it like normal and i've never had a problem.

Linux V's Windows on a Netbook - This is my opinion, The only point in running Linux is if your a fan of the OS, It offers nothing over Windows and only limits your software choice. Another good thing about Windows is driver support. Also i see no point in searching for Linux alternatives to Windows programs when you can just use Windows programs and this seems to be what most new Linux users spend their time doing.

Also, anybody have any idea what the upgrade cycle is for the netbooks? Really tempted by a netbook, but thinking of waiting afew more months. What will the newer models have? Better resolution? Bluetooth? Inbuilt 3g?

Most have BT now. I'm starting to see a few come through with inbuilt 3g so I think that's the next big change.

then thats it, mind is made up, will buy an advent 4211 (refurb) for 199 squids. 10 squids for a 1GB ram upgrade and that should do the trick....
