I want advice on what would be the best, fastest new machine I could buy for no more than £1,500 or so.

Having a look around at certain machines, they seem to cost around £2,500 for a decent, fast one

It would just be for the base unit, as I would go elsewhere and buy a separate monitor if this one ever did decide to go, but the monitor does me proud so im not going to change it when I dont have to.

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
£69.99 (£82.24)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
£114.99(£135.11)

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
£339.99 (£399.49)

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 NCQ 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (0A33435)
£50.99 (£59.91)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
£9.99 (£11.74)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
£173.99 (£204.44)

Akasa Eclipse 62 Aluminium Case - No PSU
£87.98 (£103.38)

Sub Total : £847.92
Vat : £150.30
Total : £1,009.17

That would be a VERY fast system, capable of playing any game at most any resolution, and it's way under 1.5k. If you want to go even faster you could throw in another GTX for SLi.

EDIT: I forgot to throw in a DVD drive. Add in a: Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM
£14.99
(£17.61)

That is a perfect spec and exactly what I had just added to my basket while trying one out for him!

EDIT: I just noticed you missed off a PSU for him. Try a Tagan, Enermax, Akasa, Antec, BFG, Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, Thermaltake or Zalman 600w should be about the sweet spot.

Good list - I'd recommend my Seasonic, as it sits at the bottom of the case, doing it's job and I never notice it.
