I want to be able to share media files and connect by ps3 ...xbox 360...run programs if there are any so the ipad/iphone can connect to and galaxy tablets for the media streaming.....ive heard there are freenas/windows server 2008/windows 7/windows xp or linux based... or should i just play about with it to see what suits my needs more...thanks.

I went for W7 in the end.

Mine runs XBMC, Sabnzbd+, sickbeard, couch potatoe and is my file server as well.

Dropped a cheap ATI with HDMI and 4gb ram, never missed a beat, plays massive (25gb+) mkvs with no problem at all.

It's pulled about 9 or 10tb of info down to it since I built it and never a single issue.

No real reason to use 32-bit if you can use 64.

Colleague of mine has installed Open Media Vault (http://www.openmediavault.org/) on his Microserver. He uses PC/Mac & Xbox at home and this ticks all the boxes for him, in fact he won't shut up about it now :D

It is still in beta, but is actively maintained by the author and is regularly updated.

ok gonna try open media vault see what its like...only before i decide what proper one to get or purchase...

My personal experience has been that as a multi-purpose box, ubuntu 10.04 LTS has been the best option to date, it's good enough at everything and virtually everything is *easily* available and well tested software wise. If you're not so linux savvy it's also well documented how to do common things on various forums, just google.

Fedora is too much of a nightmare these days, the other distros are too specialist and not widely documented or lacking easily available software.

Windows, well I don't like home server and I don't see a point in 2k8 if I'm not running AD (and I'm really not at home).

ok got windows 7 installed...seems to run slow so think ill get some extra memory so its not wanting....and a ssd drive for booting to ....cant live without ssd now lol...anyway and good programs i need to install that people can recommend to make it into a decent media server/file server thanks.

Ive gone from WHSv1 to WHS2011 and been very happy with the move, makes it very easy to share all my media and access remotely and with the added bonus of network backup for the rest of my PCs.
