Hey guys,

I'm looking to record all my music collection in Apple Lossless/FLAC (undecided) and I was looking at getting a 2TB external desktop hard drive. What is considered the best at the moment?

OR...

Is there another solution? I'm not really au fait with the current storage tech!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

id go with flac as its not some silly proprietary format, but ipods etc dont play flac do they?:/

you can get small 2.5inch drives which work off just usb, a 2tb box with a 3.5hd in will need a mains adapter

Well, I wouldn't be playing lossless on my iPod anyway matey, so that's not a prob! I've got dBpoweramp to encode to 320 for my iPod Classic.
But the purpose of recording my music in lossless is more for home use and so that I can get rid of my CD's as I can't afford the space they take up anymore :(

I can totally sympathise with you there! My CD collection was becoming an eater of room space too.

I fairly recently embarked on the rather lengthy project of converting all my CD's to FLAC (a project I don't ever want to do again, lol). I have a 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black HDD inside my PC specifically for my lossless audio library. I also have a second duplicate 2TB HDD inside an external IcyBox enclosure. This works really well for what I need and allows me to not only backup my music (don't want to have to re-rip any time soon due to an unforseen HDD failure), but also transport my lossless audio library around if the need ever arises.

Haha, yeah I think i'm looking at a few weeks worth of ripping. Got about 1200 CD's to do :/
I reckon i'll go for a combo of a 2TB internal HDD and a 2 or 3 TB external just to be safe unless I hear of any better solutions!

Similar number of CDs as me then. dBpoweramp was a godsend for its fast ripping speed and the security of its ripping. As I said before, I wouldn't want to do this again in the near future.

I felt that an internal and external hard drive worked well for me. The external backup gives me peace of mind that in the even of something major going wrong with my PC, at least I have my music library safe on the external HDD.

Haha yeah, I've figured that it will take an absolute minimum of 41 hours to copy them all. Fun times for sure...!

Yeah, I just need to figure out if i can afford the cost at the moment, though it all seems relatively cheap if you stick to 1-2 TB drives.
