It's the most common failure point on laptops...

Previous generation macbooks with the magnetic power connector were the best - shame they killed that on this generation.

Now the best would be Microsoft Surface.

no apple are the worse cables I've ever had, including their power cables, usb cables and just about any other cable they make due to the small plug and the thin wires they use they usually end up shorting themselves or the wires coming out of the connection part...

worse part is have you seen the price of apple MacBook pro power cables?! I've bought 3 for my girlfriends in 2 years.... all same failure points.... and she doesn't even move her cable often it stays on the desk majority of time...

although I wouldn't recommend MSI anymore never had any trouble with their PSU/cables.... but they aren't exactly budget laptops.

I believe most brands just get them sourced cheap from the east and slap their label on it if you go for a cheap laptop so not much you can do but hope for the best and hope it breaks during warranty period

Depends what sort of laptop you are after - If it's for serious use rather than gaming, I would look at "proper" business laptops like the Dell Latitudes - we have had numerous D and E series laptops at work over the years and the normal "consumer" laptop failure points (power connector and hinges) have never been an issue, despite being used and in most cases abused.

I haven't seen the magsafe fail once...

Even if it did fail more often, I would MUCH rather have the cable fail than the connector inside the laptop chassis come lose and require re-soldering or replacement motherboard... which is the primary cause of death for most laptops.

For more normal-style connectors, like Armageus mentions - Dell business-orientated (Latitude et al) have a low failure rate due to being quite heavily reinforced in that area.

I also have never seen anyone have MagSafe fail.

I agree that their cables are shoddy but MagSafe : amazing.

If people are pulling on the magsafe cable then maybe it'll break the cable off before the port. That's just careless users though. The Lenovo laptops have that rectangle yellow power connector don't they? They seem more sturdy than your normal circular power plug socket.

They're not bad connectors, but the rest of the laptop is generally terrible now unless you buy the ones that are even more expensive than Macbooks... even then the lag on the trackpad is still the highest of any laptop I've ever used.

The older style ThinkPad round power connectors seemed bulletproof so I assume the newer rectangular ones are too.

Want something cheap that won't die and can be fixed or upgraded by the user if it does? Refurbished Thinkpad T series.
