Im asking what is the best Prescott cooler? I will be doing some overclocking if I can get away with it with a decent cooler.

Im only willing to use air cooling, but am a bit out of touch with everything available.

XP-120
Lappe it
AS5
Lappe the IHS on the chip
Decent fan 30+cfm's

I had this on my P4e 3.2ghz and could run at 4ghz 24/7 and bench at 4.2ghz

Now i'm on water i run 4.2 24/7 and sometimes 4.3

Si is basicly the moden Xp, just better layout to fit all mobos so that yes will do

Thats the fan i ran on a dedicated 12v line so it had true 12v and full power to it as otherwise i founbd it not to be the specs it said

Papsat is good too

Thats good to hear. What fan did you use to cool it so much that you got 800mhz extra performance? If I can clock my P4e 3.2 to that level then I will be well happy.

I am only able to get it slightly above stock due to it having the dreaded stock cooler on. Ive got an IC-7 Max 3 mobo so can clock it as high as it can manage as soon as I remove the OTES that is currently blocking me putting on any decent heatsinks

bah! we've got a P4 3.2GHz Prescott (s478) in my girlfriends PC and it runs at 3.7Ghz quite happilly on the stock cooler (runs hot as heck though)... all this one a Gigabyte motherboard (not known for the best OCing in the world) and 1GB GeIL Value ram! :p

might tempt her to get some decent cooling, so shall be watching this thread :)

Dude

If you have an Abit IC7-MAX3 only but the best mobo out for the 478 have you had it modded?? If not get it done as it won't go any where near 3.4ghz stable due to the bord...once modded it'll work and i'll help you not on here to get it to the speed you want.

There are a shead loads of mods for that bord that make it go some, it has had 400mhz fsb on that!!!

Unless you wana swap that mobo with my asus mobo thats all ready modded??

I said what fan i used. I got run @ 4.2 stable just with a Delta on there but it wasn't nice due to noise

Oh by the way, might want to check your turst e-mail...ether my aol and aol is being gay or it's wrong

I have changed the e-mail address in trust now, it was an old one that I forgot to change to my current address I use all the time.

I didnt know that there was mods to be done on this mobo? I thought that ABIT did all the modding that needed to be done anyway? One kind of "mod" that I know I need to do is get that OTES device off, as I can only fit on a stock sized cooler with it there, which is keeping only letting me get to 3.4ghz at best so far

LOL the OTES does not affect how any HSF mounts to the 478 mount.

KEEP THE OTES ON!!!! i tred i9t on and off and differnt fans....i found if you cleaned it out of dust, bit of lube and it'll work amazing

There are vdroop, Vdim, NB, Vagp...tons mate. I can do em all for you and you need them to clock

Abit IC7-MAX3 is the most stable and highly clockable bord once modded

Asus P4C800-E Deluex is the only bord out of the box thats the most stable than anyhting but it even then still needs modding and has nothing what the MAX3 does.

Drop me an e-mail dude...i'll help you get this to oc like a beast

The trouble is that I have an SI-120 & Akasa Amber, and I tried to fit this onto the mobo, but the OTES was getting in the way so I have had to make do with the stock cooler which is rubbish TBH, even working on stock speeds its useless at cooling it to the degree im after.

Im really a newb at all this, how hard is all this "modding" going to be?

Steps to fit it

1. Place it over CPU socket and not where it hits the NB fan

2. Removed the NB and bend the fins where the heatpipe touches (i can;t stress how gently you got to be with that NB HSF okay, the caps on the NB chipset can come off easy)

3. Replace the nb really carefully

4. Now you can fit the hsf with the pipes on the nb side

The hsf wont fit with the pipes on the OTES side dude...check the HSF site it'll show you

Can ya list a spec of ya hardwere and i'll tell ya what it'll do pretty much

Thats going to be hard, as there is heatpipes on both sides of it which makes it pretty impossible to do unless there is a recommended heatsink & fan that will overclock better and also fit more easily as well?

Specs: IC-7 Max 3
P3.2 Prescott
2 x 1GB XMS Corsair Ram @ 3-3-3-8
Tagan 480W
120gb & 80gb HDD
Gainward 6800GT (Soon to be Gainward 7800GT - AGP)

Not sure what else you will need to know, thats all I can think of.

Wish there was someone that could do all of the mods for me, someone that knows what they are doing as im not sure I would be good enough to play around with it. In saying that, this rig will have to last me another year before a big upgrade to bring me upto speed with everything

Zalman 9500 is one of the best air coolers. You will get something like 30-355c idle & 45-50c under load. Should also allow a good overclock because of how good it is + for the win it fits other newer CPUs.

Only drawback is the price £45inc!

Nope belive me it will fit...i know of 50+ with them on mate. I had one and i was no epert nor am now really in fitting it. There are heat pipes only on one side...yeah they stick out over the top of the OTES on the fins...it clears them. Just the NB you have to mod thats all!!

If you wanted i'll do all the mods and oc it to the max stable i can get it mate.

That ram is no good for you...1Gb is all you'll need belive me and i got some sweet OCZ Hynix aka Intel ram thats just the ticket for you that is ment for this chipset.

I think I would probably prefer my IT guy to do NB modding as I dont want to do anything wrong there, I just dont trust myself around the PC as I just like it working without any problems. It has cut me off twice, probably due to me setting a heat level auto switch-off which is quite worrying as I was not stressing it much, just playing a Fritz chess game?

Also, when coming to install the Akasa fan above the SI-120, I cant seem to find a way of getting the Akasa fan to stay there for some reason, im just clueless when it comes to all this

HSF has wire clips with V's that go in the fan holes for case mounting

You've set you CPU temp shutdown...set it to 70c

Does he know how to do the mod and solder and cut the traces in the bord and what bits to use and stuff?

You'll need way more than a NB mod dude. I can't strees how bad this bord is oc'd without them...

I set the shut down when it reaches 80C, and am surprised when it just switches off, kind of makes me worried about how bad that stock cooler is.
Not sure if he will know about modding the board, but I certainly wouldnt risk it myself as I can be heavy handed at times.
