Hi guys

Just done a reinstall of Win7 x64 on a tasty new Crucial M4 0009 Firmware and realised I'm not really up to date on what are the best programs to run to keep the general feel of the computer 'snappy' from a fresh install.

Are the Windows updates generally good or do they contain loads of bloatware?
Are programs such as Auslogics' BootSpeed genuinely worthwhile or?
CCleaner worth having?

Just throwing this out there...

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Id say that ccleaner is the only tool you really need, you could add a third party derfragger into the mix such as deffragler though. Aside from that Windows generally stays fast for a long time.

Win7 does a great job of keeping itself in check. My SSD magically gains space every few weeks as it clears the crud off it.

If anything, as above, C Cleaner & Defraggler.

Forget them - just install the apps you need and get on with using your computer. I'd rank installing Windows Updates almost infinitely higher than using the latest tweak/cleaner/booster.

The two bits of software I would recommend are Process Explorer to keep an eye on what's running and Autoruns to switch off junk like Bonjour - but even that's a bit overkill these days especially if you're using an SSD and I do it for control rather than performance reasons.

The only other thing I could suggest is just monitoring what's using the disk space as that can be a bit of an issue at the moment due to the small capacities of solid state drives.

Nothing at all.

Windows 7 on its own is perfectly fine at keeping itself sorted. Using additional software will just accelerate the need to reinstall to get a working system again.
