Im looking at purchasing 2 drives. One for my music storage and one for movie storage. My existing drives are coming on 5yrs old so they are coming to the end of their lives and i dont want to loose all my stuff.

Western Digital Caviar Red seem to be getting high praise for their level of accoustics but I notice they run at 5900rpm but are SATA 6Gb/s.

Does this mean their are slower than my existing SATA 3Gb/s 7200rpm drives?

Im just thinking how this will affect extraction/moving file times.

Don't want them to compromise the speed of my SSD which is my windows drive.

The WD RED drives are ideally suited to NAS arrays and that's the why you pay a slightly higher premium for them. Unless you're putting those drives in a NAS/RAID it's not worth the additional spend.

If you want something quick from WD try the BLACK edition, or for power saving the GREEN ones.

Problem is....how do you backup 3Tb+ of stuff?

Run Raid5 in a NAS enclosure for redundancy at home.

Then off site back up either with copying all the data yourself and take it to a family member say...weekly, or use online cloud solution like Crashplan.

I put 4 x 3TB in a NAS recently and it is REALLY quiet.
