Given that it is a single platter, it should be quieter than most drives, which will have more than one platter. They also feature acoustic management which will allow you to slow them down to make them more quiet. So they aren't a bad choice.

I'm running 3 Samsung drives and they are all almost silent, even when seeking, when only the slightest clicking can be heard.

I run 2 250gb drives in Raid0 and a 160gb for backup.

They are way quieter than any other drive I have ever owned.

Mine are the SP1614C and SP2504C drives, but I would imagine the F1's are just as good.

thx for the replies !,

I should have bought samsungs in the first place !, i first got a seagate, which at the time everyone was also raving about and it was a gable wether you got a silent one or not, and what did i get, a damn noisy one !. then i got the WD 500AAKS, not as noisy, but still clicks away when seeking etc.

I hope I can find a samsung 320 GB F1 soon, I was hopping to buy this new harddrive tommorow, and have it by weds. its going into my new matx system on my desktop, so the noise is even closer to me now, i lived with the harddrive before when it was under the desk and away.

WD Caviar SE16 640GB 16MB (WD6400AAKS) £70.49 inc VAT

have a look at that thread in this section of the forums, it's meant to be quiet, fast and have lower power consumption due to the 320GB platters it uses

My samsung drive is the quietest one I have - which is in use in a HD Caddy. I have a seagate 7200.11 in my Media Centre which is near enouth silent - sometimes I can hear it accessing etc - but not so much I can hear it when the volume is turned up at a normal level for a film etc... Im happy with it.

How about a Raptor (LOL just joking :P , its not quiet, but it is fast :p )

that didnt really help did it, I'd take these guys advice and get a single platter drive like the samsung range or something

I wil let u's all know considering just done the ordering next day delivery, they dont do saturdays, so I figure if they sent them out today then Monday should get them, going to do a HDTACH first then mirror my main raid 0's to these new ones at raid 0, using acronis so it should be all ok :-)

Cant find a review with benchies anywhere on these Seagates. Apparently they are too new. Seeing as the F1's are scacer that the proverbial hen's teeth, the Seagate should be a decent replacement.

Eyeing this up as a possible alternative to the F1, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

bah missed those stunning F1 1TB @ £120 deals :( bet they woulda been the nutz think though I will simply add it into the Japanese Gup silent box, and have good cooling/silence factor.

Samsung no question, especially with the new single platter drive. Got myself one of their older and latest and both are silent.

Hi all

got the new Seagates today added them as raid 0 additoinally to my installed raid 0 Hard drives

ie 2 off maxtors at raid 0 running Vista 64

added Seagates onto Raid 0,

so thats 4 hard drives Maxtor paired onto raid 0 with Vista 64 bit
and Seagates plugged into system totaly blank at raid 0

results are;

Maxtors;

main.php

and Seagates;
main.php

PS going to mirror over Vista using Acronis onto new Hard Drives

then see if boot ok.
