Been looking at getting some Simulation games to play and have my eyes set on MS Flightsim X but I've always fancied a shot of a Rail sim since I first played MS Rail Sim a few years back but now there seems to be Railworks and Trainz, what is the best one?

Ive just purchased Railworks 2 as that appears to be the sim of choice on the net. I have Microsoft train simulator and that was good in its day, but on today's equipment looks a bit outdated. Am looking forward to Railworks, its on back order so Ive got to wait for stock but as soon as it comes Ill let you know how it is. If anybody has any input, do's and don'ts it would be handy.

As for Flight Simulator X, its a great game. That said, I personally wouldn't purchase it now with the new Microsoft Flight on the horizon. For a game that was released a few years ago you would think that the kit of today would be able to max it out, but it can't. The scenery, although an improvement on previous Flight Sim versions, still isn't a match for some of the custom scenery on the market. This to me is annoying when you pay a considerable amount for a game.

That would be great mate! I did see Flight Sim X for £10 somewhere, CEX I think so I may pick it up at that price!!!

At that price you can't go wrong. I think I paid over 50 quid for my copy of FSX and was more like 55 quid to get it for the next day. Ive had a second wind on FSX. Been playing it solid for the past week, perfect for those times when you've got time off work and your motor is in the garage lol. :p

Depends on what you're trying to do really.
As stated above, there are 3 basic choices- BVE & it's variants (OpenBVE, BVE4 & BVE5), Microsoft Train Simulator & Rail Simulator.
1. BVE- I've been building for BVE for the past 9 years, so I'm a little biased. The best version is probably OpenBVE at the moment. This simulator is best if you want absolute realism, but tends to come up a little short on the graphics front.
2. Microsoft Train Simulator- Operational realism suffers when compared to BVE, but there are massive amounts of free routes available as well as plenty of payware stuff. An awful lot of this looks absolutely brilliant once you've stuck on full AA etc.
3. Rail Simulator- Operational realism is almost non-existant (exaggeration, but there are big problems with the signalling and AI models), and it's got the paid DLC issues that seem to be getting more and more common. It's also buggy, but looks very nice by default.

Try asking this question over at the UKTrainsim forums for more info, and some better views on capabilities for what you're trying to do.

As for the FSX performance: A few years have gone by, and it's still as sluggish as it was. I can't understand it. It's still the same PC though, perhaps I should get a new one.

:D

I have the same issue with FSX, I upgraded my PC just recently and expected a massive increase in performance but I did not get it. I think the sim is limited to using 4Gb and is not optimised for 64 bit processors.

Well that was confusing for a moment.
Looked at the 1st post date 12 Nov then saw 3rd post 24th Nov!!! what the hells going on, ahh 2010.
Welcome to 2011

Anyway if anyone still was thinking of getting Railworks wait for the steam Christmas sale could be on there like last year with addons 75% off.
Not long now.
