As above.
Its on an old skool, lol, 17" CRT monitor, and Geforce 128Mb gfx card.

Any recommendations for the best resolution and refresh rate to set it to, to minimise headaches/eye strain etc.
It goes up to a max res of 1280x1024

Thanks :)

try to aim for a minimum of 85hz. as for screen resolutions, on crt's here is what i run:

15" 800*600
17" 1024x768
19" 1024*768
21" 1152*864

least eye strain for me, i hate it when everything becomes tiny.

only when gaming do i crank it up to 1600x1200 on my crt.

I always used 1280/1024 on my 19"... I always found 1024/768 to make it all to big for my liking:)

Id say 75hz+ you willl notice a huge difference if its only set to 60hz.

Simple experiment: Set monitor refresh rate @ 60Hz (any resolution) then point a digital camera or camera-phone at the screen & see what your eyes see  :( On a 17-inch I'd use 1024x768 @ >70Hz.

Also don't forget to adjust Brightness & Contrast! Should find some guides here or on Google. Personally I set the brightness very very low & contrast to almost full, e.g. 10:80 :D

Ok, cheers for the replies.
It can do 85Hz refresh rate, @ 1024x768.
I tried 1280x1024, and it makes things mega tiny, with a 60hz max refresh rate, lol.

1152x864 looks ok tho, at 75hz.

Good test that with camera phone, as it shows exactly what the refresh rate is doing.

Also, whats the best colour setting to use?
I have 6500k, and 9300k, i've read 6500k is correct, but i dont really like how it makes whites look yellowish.

Thats what I had my 17" at. I didnt hve any problems whatsoever. Anything below 75 is a big nono though (even on a TFT  !)

Im leaving it at 1152x864 @75Hz.
Looks a good setting between not being too big, or too small.

Not sure about the colours tho.

1152*864 @ 75 Hz is the best compromise setting for a 17" CRT IMO. Just make sure you use the refresh rate override in your video card drivers so it doesn't drop back to 60 Hz in games. When you run a game get the monitors OSD up and check the refresh rate.

As for colours there's no right and wrong, just set it to whatever looks best for you. You can adjust red, green and blue seperately if you don't like any of the presets.

I use the following:

14": 800x600
15": 800x600
17": 1024x768
19": 1152x864
21": 1280x960

Refresh rate should be set to the maximum available. You can calculate this by dividing your monitors horizontal frequency by the number of vertical pixels, and then again by 1.1

e.g. if your monitor is 96kHz, then at 1024x768 the best refresh rate to use is:

96000/768/1.1 = ~113hz
