Hi guys,

I have had enough at how poor our wifi is in our house. Currently on the biggest package Virgin offer (152mb) and we get speeds of less than 30mb, connection drops, laggy buffering etc. So looking to buy a different router to see if that resolves our issues as virgin tech support have been terrible.

What are my options? Do I need to look at specific routers for the cable type connection? Don't really have a budget, I suppose £100 is the max.

I use a TL-WR1043ND connected to the SH2 in modem mode. Cost me about £35 and does me perfectly.

Easy to setup?

What were your reasons for not using the SH2 as a router?

Very easy to setup as you can basically just connect the SH to the WAN port and it works. Obviously you would then need to change the LAN and Wi-Fi settings to match your setup.

I use it to give me more control than the SH would.

So I got hold of a new router (TD-W8980 N600) in hope to improve our wireless. We have connected it all up and put the superhub in modem mode and connected the router to it but having so many issues.. We do not seem to be getting any information pulled across from the modem. DHCP enabled. Set to dynamic IP operation mode still with no luck. Any ideas?

Make sure its connected to the WAN port. Reboot the modem as well while the router is still on. I had this issue with an Asus N56u and rebooting the modem fixed it.

Done that hundreds of times, starting to think this router is incompatible.

The TP-Link TD-W8980 N600 appears to be for ADSL2 lines. Does it have a port on the back labelled ADSL? If so you are correct in thinking that this is not compatible with your Virgin SH2. For a similar price to that you can get an ASUS RT-N65u which is what I have and would recommend it as it is a great piece of kit. In general you should be looking at routers labelled (most often) as Cable routers and not ADSL Modem/Router.

there is no way that thing can route 152Mbps over wireless.

OP, if you can stretch about 20 - you could find RT-AC68U on offer.

or slightly more budget friendly AC66U

or maybe Linksys EA6400 for around 80.

or even have a look at TP-Link Archer C7

do you get poor speeds on wifi or on cable too? are you on SH1 or SH2?

I am in a similar boat - wifi is shocking in the new house and really need to look at a new router. Virgin upgraded from 100 to 150 when we moved, but haven't seen more than 20 in the new place. I have seen a few people recommend the Asus RT-N65U now, so I think I will give that a go.

Don't need a extra router any more if you have the new Super Hub 2. Its much better than the original Super Hub 1.

I have the superhub 2, wifi is still terribe. I get max 30mbps DL on a 152mb line. Streaming HD videos is impossible.

I am on VM 160 MB broadband and use a TPLink WDR3600 with DDWRT installed and speed test gives me a solid 157 MB speed

I'd look into getting wifi APs. I have the SH2 and bought a N56u, wifi didn't improve at all (worse in some cases). Good router, but didn't work well in my house.

Went back to the SH2 and its fine for my needs.

I've found myself in the same boat. I've a SH2.

I've found that my wifi (and management web page) frequently crash, perhaps 5 times a day when it's at it's worst. The wired connection is still fine, but as the management is borked I have to hard power cycle. I don't use heavy bandwidth over wifi (that's on my gigabit ethernet) but I do have 4 squeezeboxes plus phones and tablets. So I decided to pull my trusty Bipac 7800N out the cupboard and use that in router/wifi only mode.

However I've found that despite the fact it's got a gigabit switch in it the EWAN port doesn't get much past 60Mb. No use for me on the 152Mb product!

So I'm l looking for an affordable high speed (>152Mb capable) with robust (but not necessarily fast) wifi. All the usual suspect suggested are £70-£120. I was hoping to pay about £40!!

Anything recommended?

Trendnet TEW-813DRU. Got mine via Flubit for just under £45. Has AC and N Wireless as well as Gigabit LAN. I was able to get all 152 down through it on my VM connection.
