A sensible answer will require more information about your requirements. For a start what sort of WAN connection do you need?

All wireless has to work within the same power limitations. The placement matters more than most other factors.

As stated above, there are legal limits on the transmit power and aerial amplification so that in reality all WLAN devices are much of a muchness. Some do have very sensitive listening antennae but ultimately there is a limit to what physics can do.

If you think of your WLAN device as a ball of coverage, you’re probably sinking a lot of that coverage underneath or outside of your house. Most consumer routers I see are next to the front door or behind the TV. Moving the WLAN device to the middle of the building will often fix a lot of issues straight away. Behind the TV is especially bad as TVs are specifically made to block wireless transmissions.

So the simple truth is that you’d probably be best spending your £100 on moving your phone socket somewhere close to the middle of the house.
