Best RPG?

So it maybe good, but not a landmark?
Definitely a landmark.

Oblivion is stunning, the Zelda games aren't RPGs, and the Final Fantasy series on the whole is pretty perfect. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is amazing, probably Oblivion then that as my top two. :)

It's a tie for me atm between Ultima IV, Planescape Torment, FFVII and Oblivion! All different games and all hold very fond memories for me.

I'll go old school and say Ultima Underworld 2 was one of my favourites, but BG1 and then BG2 replaced it. But I could not find many console ones I really loved, Shining Force on the Mega Drive was maybe the first. However, Oblivion is now getting close to #1 overall.

Imo no, Vandal Hearts is good but no landmark.

Think he was talking about Vandal Hearts being a landmark or not, not Oblivion :)

Vandal Hearts is absolutely awesome, one of my all time fav games. But is it really an RPG?

That would make something like Advance Wars an RPG too wouldnt it?

It counts as a Strategy RPG so different kind of RPG to the others in the thread and more linear because of it, not really sure about Advance Wars though.

Don't really class VH as an RPG myself. Definitely strategy.

It might have the style of an RPG, but the actual gameplay, being purely turn-based, isnt very "Role Playing" IMO.

OOT and MM on the n64 were amazing. I bought a gamecube purely for wind waker, and i'm keeping it purely for TP. Oblivion is the only rpg since the zelda games to keep me going for this long. Unless you count deus ex 1/2 as an RPG, if so thats way ahead of all of them :)

I prefer FF7 but really I couldn't compare FF7 to OOT because they're different styles of RPGs, and they both represent the pinnacle of RPG goodness when it comes to that kind (FF7 for turn based console RPG and OOT for action RPG).
Then again Chrono Trigger would come bloody close for FF7 style RPG :o

Bah, I love em all :D

OMFG!!!!, I'm off work and Uni for like 3 weeks! FF7, I'm coming baby!

Would have to agree with this, it had an excellent cast of characters and a plot that was simple but drew you in perfectly :)

Other than that, FFVII, Ocarina of Time, Phantasy Star Online (DC version), Morrowind, Guild Wars and now Oblivion are all up there at the top, I don't really think I could choose a favourite! oh and Dungeon Master on the Amiga

Phantasy Star Online (GC version by far) was an awesome experience for me and OoT beat FFVII by a large margin but you can't beat the old SNES Chrono Trigger/Secret of Mana/Zelda/FF 1-6 games. They royally rocked!

mmy favoriate rpg has got to be Seiken Densetsu 3, with chrono trigger and lufia 2 close behind :)

althou im quite enjoying oblivion
i woudln't mind getting into the final fantasy games, but i've never owned a player station and only a few have been released on the pc

My favorite 3 RPG's are all quite different...

Secret of Mana
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Oblivion

All brilliant in their own right. Mana is just proof that you don't need snazzy graphics - just tons of atmos and brilliant gameplay. Zelda:OoT was just a masterpiece and probably the greatest game ever made - it's almost without fault. Oblivion is a work of flawed genius - or an absolutely astonishing achievement....the jury is still out :)

I decided not to mention Deus Ex because it's more of a hybrid game than a pure or traditional RPG. But it would be up there.

My top 4 would be (in no particular order) Phantasy Star 4, Fallout, KOTOR & Oblivion. Never really got into the FF series, probably didn’t give them enough time, might have to have a look if I ever get bored of Oblivion. ;)

Chrono Trigger!

Only Zelda game I've played through was the Gameboy one, Links Awakening... really like that.
A very under-loved game imo. Link's Awakening is up there with Link to the Past for top-quality 2d Zelda games. :)

Ocarina of Time was good as was Secret of Mana and KOTOR, but none come close to Zelda:A Link To The Past. Amazing game and was the game that got me into RPG's.

I still need to get Oblivion and give it a whirl.
