best sat nav for around £200

I have the Garmin nuvi 310 and I'm very happy with it. I bought the deluxe version which came with all the Western Europe road maps and traffic jam receiver.

my bet would be the new tomtom one, ive got one and very impressed with it. especially adding voices lol. ive got homer simpsons at the moment.

i was speaking to a guy today who said tom tom has really poor coverage of northern ireland (which i need cause i live there :p )

he said anything that uses Nav Teq has N.I. sorted. i think the Garmin uses this? been looking at the Garmin 310 now, it has the SiRF Star III i think so,

Cruiser, yes the Garmin units have the better navtech maps. We've got a Garmin Streetpilot 550 in one of our cars and it is excellent, but it is expensive normally (my brother works for navtech so got it cheap through staff discount for me). I've heard really good things about the Garmin Nuvi units as well on other forums.

Tomtom ONE V2 comes in regional and Europe editions, the Europe Edition is ~£240 and uses Navteq maps, so Ireland is fully covered.

I've had plenty of Sat Nav's but keeping coming back to TOMTOM, it's not that the others are bad, Its the add-ons and commonality accross platforms that I just prefer.

Does the TomTom 1 v2 detect speed cameras "straight out of the box"?.

If not, can you add that feature and if so, how much?.

i think it does out the box.. if not you can add it later :) cant remember the cost.. but its not overly costly

Thanks.

Any idea what type of speed cameras it detects?. I assume it only detects fixed location ones within the units database?.

No sat nav can 'detect' speed cameras, they'll only every be able to tell you where they are as long as its loaded on the maps.

Snooper should have come up with something that linked to a radar/laser detector when they made their sat nav

Yep thats what it does :).. lazer detectors are useless anyway tbh mate.. as if the detector has detected the lazer.. its on you.. which means they have your speed...
