Best screen recording software?

Does FRAPS allow for a different codec to be used? That would save some file space and performance at lose of some quality.

Here is some 1080P EVE Online Footage recorded using DXTORY.

It gives no lag, has loads of options and the quality comes out perfect. It really is worth a try with the right settings.

I use MSI Afterburner, the latest beta version which is 2.20 beta 7 records audio as well.

Which the current 2.10 version does not.

The following video was recorded using MSI Afterburner 2.20 beta 7 with the following settings.

I used Windows Live Movie Maker for editing.

I would actually recommend buying this one to support the developers. Its a great, underexposed bit of kit! License is unlimited with constant updates. (Like FRAPS)

I own both and FAR prefer DXTORY.

When set-up right it really shines.

I've bought and used, Fraps, DXTory, Bandicam and Playclaw. For me the champion is DXTory. I can choose the exact framerate, I can choose the exact resolution, I can record multiple soundtracks and have them remain separate and at the same time play as if nothing it happening in the background.

How do yo uue Afterburner to capture video anyway??? I cant figure it out! I set up F12 as a hot key but it never captures anything when I have it running in the background

This, This & This.

Interesting. I've used Playclaw and FRAPS, and prefer Playclaw over Fraps (though it does have a few games it wont work with). I'll have to give DXtory a try.

Off topic, but what hardware solutions are there?

You can buy an external VGA recorder that will make a copy of your video output. The process reduces lag significantly because the hardware will be charge of any compression, not your own computer's CPU. These are relatively expensive, though, and I would recommend just upgrading your computer. With that said, they're great for livestreams.

Also, keep in mind that these external devices don't necessarily have a lot of storage space, so you'll also have to come up with a solution to "inventory management." Not sure if you can hook them up to an external hard drive. Remember, these things will take up gigs of space for just a few minutes.

Side note: I've heard of quite a few Let's Players switching over to Dxtory. I'm gonna have to give that a try.

Dxtory seems pretty good.
I run the game off my SSD and run Dxtory on my 250GB.
Only problem was a 3 minute video = 17GB......

I'm doing it wrong obviously.

What codec are you using for compression? That seems abnormally high, even for an uncompressed codec like uncompressed AVI. I'm going to download it DXTory right now and play around with the settings.

EDIT: Wow, it costs 50 bucks? Pretty pricey. :/

Is there any documentation for DXtory? It has a lot of settings and I dont know what some of them are for.

Is it possible to play in Eyefinity and record not in Eyefinity: have it capture only the central 1920x1080, and scale it to 1280x720? If so, how?

Edit: I've found it, and yes it is possible. Neat.
The performance doesn't seem as good as with Playclaw - in portal 2, there's a significant frame rate drop that i don't see in playclaw, but my system can cope. It makes me worry about a more demanding game though - should be fun to test anyway.

MSI afterburner works great for me.

I was recording my last few vids at 30 FPS and 75% quality, but it made gameplay a little too choppy and blurred the video quality too much (didnt really need the recordings reduced in quality as movie maker does that without sacrificing as much quality as Afterburners compression does).

So I increased the video quality to 100%, and the FPS to 35, and it records 100% smoothly in full quality without any choppy-ness ingame :)
