I'm debating giving my kids PC's internet access, problem is their PC's are in their bedrooms so if we did I'd obviously be concerned about the normal things that would concern any parent.

Therefore I'm looking for a set of software I can use to reduce to an acceptable level the risks. You guys may end up in fact saying don't do it but I'd like to at least examine the possibility.

Obviously the OS would be setup with them as a low level user so they can't install anything.

On top of that I'm thinking :-

no MSN ( if they want to talk to friends use the PC's downstairs )
no IRC (Ditto)
AV
Firewall
net nanny type software.

Anything else you'd suggest?

This would be running probably on windows 2000 (as I have spare 2K licences and out of XP ones)

You could try Bitdefender Internet Security which has an excellent AV, Spyware and Firewall as well as antispam. More importantly it comes with Paraental Control which is password protected and can filter out the nasty stuff. I think there are standard settings for porn as well as violence, racism etc. but you can create custom rules as well.

I use a great little applications called Admuncher that is a pop up blocker and ad filter but it includes options for filtering out all adult content.
