Best shmups on MAME

I've always loved vertical shmups so finally got round to downloading MAME yo relive my arcade past...

anyone got any suggestions? im currently playing Raiden

I always liked the 1942 / 1943 series. They were great fun.

The new space invaders game was good as well. I enjoyed Space Force. My faves were horizontal though with games such as Nemesis, Salamander, Silk Worm, etc.

Obvious ones are;

Gradius
R-Type
Raiden
Twinbee
RayStorm/Crisis
Parodius

And just a crap load of others.

For non-emulated stuff, there are plenty of independent/doujin shooters out there too. A small company called SITER SKAIN produces some of the best and they are easily influenced by already established titles. Kamui for example is similar to RayStorm in the mechanics.

Im new to MAMe and only about half of the games work...im using 2 different versions to get most of them up and running what do people recomend.

Try anything from Psikyo (they did the strikers series)

Some classic shooters there.

Zero Gunner 2 on my Dreamcast is my favourite shmup.
Recently got Dragon Blaze on my PS2.

I really do miss Psikyo.

A lot of the games work only on the older versions of mame. They keep adding new games constantly and sometimes with new versions of mame some games stop working for some reason.
