I am looking for the best small HD thats not an SSD for my OS.

Am I correct in thinking it would be the Samsung F3, I only need something thats about 250 gig.

Cant justify the cost of ssd's right now.

thanks

From you sig, you have a Samsung 750GB already? That would be the F1? If so I can't see why you'd need a whopping 250 GB for the OS? For £100 you could get something like a VelociRaptor 150 GB or Intel X25-V 40 GB which for most users, is more than enough for OS + apps. The F3 is a decent drive all the same but I'd personally prefer the Raptor or SSD for the boot drive.

Well the 750 I have is the F1 version,

I would like a 250 gig purely for the OS and apps/software/games that I often run so they load up faster. The 750gig will then be converted to storage drive.

I wont be purchasing an SSD right now so just want something small and quick for OS etc, as far as I know the Raptors arent much quicker than the new HD's anyways.

500GB WD Black is about the best cheap mechanical OS drive you can get, better access times than the F3. Not that much faster overall than your 750 though.
Maybe pick up a couple of second hand velociraptors and put them in RAID0? Even then you're approaching SSD prices.

Bottom line is you won't get any significant performance gain unless you're prepared to go SSD.

I use a VelociRaptor and an F3 and the former is a better performer for OS IMO though not by a huge margin. Wouldn't it make more sense to move your games off the OS partition to the F1?

Well an SSD certainly fits the bill of small, quick and very suitable for the OS. Understand completely if you are on a budget but if you can afford it, then I think you should consider it for significant performance gains vs a bunch of wasted space you don't necessarily need.

hmm maybe I could be persuaded to cough up the dosh for an ssd, I guess I would need atleast a 64gb I'll have a look around and see whats about.
